Sweeteners vary but are usually caster sugar, white sugar, brown sugar, or a combination of the three. Pumpkin pie also usually has cream in it. One of my hacks is to substitute melted vanilla ice cream instead. Spices are traditionally ginger and cinnamon in fairly large amounts, about half...

Awww! I use Avitrol Bird Wormer. No withholding period and you add it to their water. It's clear. Mine have never had any issues with it - so maybe it was just hot?

Hahaha, thanks for reminding me, Rodney - I need to do the second round of our worming. XD I've been incredibly stressed out the last few days. Tetra's hatch was due on Thursday and nothing happened. On Friday I finally saw one chick and was extremely worried that no more of the 7 eggs...

Okay - that's really good to know. I do sometimes set eggs with a smidge off dried poop on them. This is because I sell all of my better hatching eggs and keep only the ones unable to be sold for myself (body checked eggs, cracked eggs, misshapen eggs, etc). My hatching rates aren't fantastic...

So...reading about how I should prepare my incubator before setting the eggs for hatching, several tutes seem to suggest that I should dip my eggs in hydrogen peroxide to sanitize them. My instinct is that this is not a great idea. :| Am I misinterpreting this? I'm hesitant to do it. :/...

Before my husband had his gallbladder surgery he was eating mostly brown rice cooked in chicken stock with frozen veggies. As I often do when wandering through my yard eating, I shared the love by throwing some spoonfuls around to the hens. I was -swarmed by chicken floods-. XD

It's Tetra's hatching day! Whee! I popped out around 6am and lifted her up just a smidge to see if we had any babies under her wing but saw all of the eggs were pipped instead. I let Tetra settle back down (thankfully she's very gentle with that and is terribly forgiving of me lifting her fluff...

Uuuugh. My dog Bruno has started egg stealing again. I'm finding my plastic dummy eggs all over the yard from when he realizes he's not getting a tasty treat and drops them. I think it may be time for me to fill more shells with hot sauce and give doggy a treat. >:D

Huh - it's actually not that model but it looks to use the -exact- same controller, so those instructions should actually work for me anyway! XD Thank you! <3 I was about to go looking for something like that. I found it on Becky's Homestead - a YouTuber who appears to basically be living my...

OMG it's some kid of day. My husband had gall bladder surgery yesterday and I drove about 300km today back and forth running errands and getting him from the hospital. My chickens have decided that they don't like my new nesting boxes, so I had to set up new new ones today. I was using crates...

The weather here is meant to be a max of 24, VERY VERY WINDY, with cool breezes. I'm sitting outside right now and I'm shivering just because of the wind. XD Also because I've apparently gotten used to roasting. XD While I was attempting to remove my head roo's spurs via potato (because he's...

Well if they're day 19/20, put them down and stop touching them. ;) After day 18, eggs should be in lockdown and not touched unless ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY and the incubator should not be opened to prevent loss of humidity. You're probably fine but try to avoid touching them again. At day 18 or...

Especially if you are using a fairly low powered light for candling (like a flashlight), the yolk/chick basically looks like a black spot once the chicks have developed past ~10 days. The photo on the left is what mine look like. If you can see the chicks moving and veins, you're doing well. <3

This pleases me. :3 Mine don't all change. Though Queenie becomes Queen ***** - I've come to appreciate that she's NOT THAT BAD. My current broody Tetra has turned into Tetrociraptor. She turns into a broody ball of rage, stomping around during her morning constitutional and threatening to...

Oh god yes. People ask me what I do all day being a stay at home mum. I tell them that my chickens require a lot more attention most days than my 5 year old. It's crazy. At least he can open the refrigerator and get himself an apple. I have one Isa Brown who is cranky at me for having...

Glad it's not just me. :) At some point I will get photos of all of the babies but first I have to pry them out of Queenie's cold, dead, and rather bitchy talons. At first when we opened up the maternity brooder to let them out each day she led them back in each night. Now she's taken to...

Please say "Blondzilla" is that chicken's real name. Please. If it's not true, make it up. I need this. XD
