    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

The unpasteurized(up) ACV contains live bacteria that help kickstart the fermentation process. Pasteurized ACV has had that bacteria killed from cooking. You can get UP/ACV from many stores, you just have to look for it.

Personally i wouldn't because the good bacteria could be effected by the medication or vice versa. But I don't think there's anything that says you can't, there's just nothing that says it's OK either.

Well, that's a lot more complicated since egg chickens self-regulate a lot more. Egg hens have a tendency to go and seek out what they need, and have a more varied diet, especially free range, and meet their nutritional needs more easily. Basically, an egg hen (generally) eats until it's...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Well, that's an easy answer. Fermented feed is not designed for optimal growth it's designed for optimal health. A simple example of this is simple volume/weight ratios. Let's say you have 2lbs of dry chicken feed split across two chickens, so each chicken gets 1lb of feed. One lb of feed is...

I think it largely depends on how much your birds end up utilizing the proteins. Since fermentation makes the protein more absorpable by the animals, you'd (in theory) want to drop down to the 20% protein feed if your goal were to get the equivalent of 24% protein. If your goal is to feed out...

It might be a mess but it sure looks like the right consistency to me. If it gives you peace if mind (and therefore makes you happier) than not dealing with the extra water would, I say keep doing it that way! It's not hurting anything. :P

Welp. Guess all my chickens are getting a weekly dose of cayenne now. XD

Nah, she means they were older hens she picked up from someone else who had inferior husbandry (many egg farms retire hens at 18 months and they have years of laying left). It's all about the diet/care. A crummy diet/care results in crummy tasting eggs. The chemical composition of the egg is...

I agree that is likely your problem. Keep it cold when you are soaking/brining too, ice water, back of the fridge. Make 100% sure you cook it to a safe temperature. Use a meat thermometer.

It could be any number of factors... From the chickens being left alone too long after death before gutting or busting an organ or bad feed or anything. If the meat isn't getting you sick and you still want to eat them, brine them. Soak them in water overnight and then in new water with a bit...

Uh, sure, for a gallon of water I'd use about a tablespoon and a half of dark brown sugar, packed (can be subbed with a little over a tablespoon of sugar & a half tablespoon of molasses. Do not sub with raw sugar or light brown sugar.) and a 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt (only use some form of...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Sorry, this thread gets a lot of people who have no idea what a healthy ferment smells like (which can be pretty gross). I'm glad you know what you're doing. It's good to not feed a sick hen spoiled food. :) You might wanna try some scrambled egg (normally I would suggest raw, but why chance it...

"Smells very bad" could mean a lot of things. Can you be more descriptive? It could mean that the ferment is just fine. Fermented feed works by allowing the same bacteria and acids that exist in our gut system to break down the food in advance of consuming it. This makes the nutrients more...

    Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds

Each bird will eat 2.5-3lbs of dry feed per one lb of live body weight by 8-14 weeks old. So if you have an 8lb chicken, you have probably fed it about a half bag of dry feed and it will dress down to about 5-6lbs. I don't know what this looks like on a week to week basis. I plan on 20-25lbs of...

Ferment definitely impedes sprouting. It's not water at that point... It's vinegar and alcohol, etc. Plants need a certain PH to grow (which is why soil PH is important during gardening) and this PH is gonna be WAY too acidic for that.

Metals just react to acids sometimes, sometimes negatively. I agree with using something other than metal. I like food grade plastic, myself. And yeah, the scoby is the same sorts that form in kombucha, live acv, kefir, etc. Different specific strains of bacteria.

I agree with the above posts. Everything sounds normal to me. I keep my ff outside. Mold will be blue, green or black. 9/10 white fuzz is yeast, not mold. Think about bread mold. It'll be kinda like that. Even then, some molds are pretty harmless. Chickens can eat just about anything. I throw...

FF smells different to everyone. It could just be that you're more sensitive to it than some people or it could be an ingredient in your feed. Basically the way fermenting feed works is the bacteria and acid breaks down the nutrients the same way that digestion does. That means that it can...

I mean... 8lbs at 8 weeks is a commercial operation goal... Most of us have little or no experience with that... Fermented feed isn't designed for optimal growth to age ratio... It's designed for optimal health and minimal waste. I find my bigger chickens hit 8lbs at 10 weeks ish. You might...

We don't bother draining and if I were you I would not drain either. The liquid aids in digestion and keeps your birds hydrated and helps them to not over-eat. I know when I first got chickens I fed Purina. I looked up every single ingredient on the list and most of them were vitamin...
