Good evening everyone, hope all is well in the world of backyard chickens! Quick question for anyone who knows anything about ducks; what breed is this? I rescued it from my next door neighbours garden, so naturally thought it must be a mallard, because they're the only wild ducks we have around...

I agree, Vippy is a fantastic name! :) I am sorry to hear about your RIR, it's not nice to wake up to that when you don't expect it. Thank you for all the advice yesterday, made me feel a lot better and she is happy enough today :)

Well I've checked her this morning and she seems to have perked up, no more blood around her back end and no bloody poop that I could see, hopefully she is ok now though. She has always been a bit hit and miss with her egg laying, she went off for about 3 months over summer, so I'm guessing she...

Yes I am going to send a drake and a duck to the next sale I think, then I should have 1 drake to 3 girls, a ratio I much prefer the sound of. I would love to try giving them an alternative to their usual breakfast, though I'm sure my parents wouldn't be too happy with me taking their porridge...

My fingers are crossed for you both! It sounds like you have both been through a lot! Perhaps sticking with the purple/lavender theme, you could call her Violet? Quite a pretty name for a hen ^_^ I will try and separate her and start her on the Harkers then, and hopefully the drakes wont hassle...

Good evening Barbara Your input is greatly appreciated! Even if it is chicken related, I'm pretty sure it is fully relatable to ducks as well. I have some Harkers left over from the last time I treated them for cocciodosis, will this be good enough? She was drinking when I had her in the bath...

Oh they are just gorgeous! I absolutely love the silver runner, her colour is amazing! I don't particularly have any names for my ducks unfortunately, I can't tell them apart at the best of times so I don't think giving them names would make it any easier! My sister has taken to calling one of...

Well with the big that my chicken/duck coop has turned into she could've found and eaten anything down there! I most certainly hope she hasn't, but we shall see. Just wish it would hurry up and warm up so that the ground hardens, my poor chickens keeps sinking!

Thanks Sasha, You've been a great help and honestly made me feel a lot better about the whole situation! I will assess her in the morning and see how she is. Of course I shall let you know! Georgie x

I haven't seen her eat anything today really, as I mentioned she wasn't bothered when I went to take them their afternoon corn, she would normally come charging over and shove her face in it. Probably just feeling sorry for herself, I hope

How would i find out if she is having problems laying then? As I say I looked at her vent after I washed her and nothing seemed to look out of place, so I'm hoping she isn't having any internal problems. I will see how she is in the morning then and perhaps think about finding a way to separate...

Hi Sasha I have two drakes to four ducks. As I say they've only just reached sexual maturity, so I'm hoping it's just because of that and they'll calm down soon enough, that or because it's coming up to spring and they're going into overdrive. I think she is the only one laying as well, the...

Hello everyone! How are we all? It's been a horrible dreary day over here in Ilkley, fog and drizzle all day :/ been very miserable. Does anyone know anything about ducks? One of my Aylesbury ladies seems very down at the minute. She has never been the most social of ducks, goes off on her own a...

Awww bless him! None of mine seem to like to get that close with me, they'll only come up and see me if they think I have food! Was only really Dave who would come for a cuddle. I can't say I've ever actually seen any Thuringians for sale anywhere! Are they quite a popular breed?

Oh he was a fine looking chap! Love the colours! I'm so sorry that he lost his last fight We do our best for them everyday, though sometimes I think they're just not meant to be no matter how hard we try. All we can do is love them, and hope they understand and love us back

He's the last of my Scots Grey cockerels. By some twist of fate he has never been ill, not had what all his brothers had, and is flourishing into a beautiful looking gentleman. Got massive bright red comb and wattles, 6 months old, and just started crowing the other day. Bruce (my original...

I'm not sure it is something that you can make a hen do. I know some breeds are more broody than others, especially silkies! I've only ever had one of my hens go broody, a dark Sussex. All my other chicks I hatched myself with an incubator and brooder.

Yes, I managed to keep Dave alive for 6 months after he hatched on his back and couldn't walk, complete miracle how he just kept trying to fight it. Just would've been nice if he could've pulled through. I'm sorry for your loss also, I don't know what I'd do if a fox attacked my lot. Touch wood...
