Had these hatch last week. Got a funny feeling one is a bloke just because it's comb is bigger then the others but still unsure of breed.

Timons post seconded. Despite me now having branched out to dual purpose birds for eating they still deserve the best. One of the reasons why I don't want specific meat birds is that I don't feel like processing them at a young age. My brahma will be 6 months, the Sussex a bit older. Just...

I was on exercise with the army. It's been nice and warm here in Suffolk since I've been back, so not too bad to adjust to. Yep. Well hopefully it's a Christmas to ourselves this year, I know my parents are away so hopefully the in-laws are too and we can just relax. Thanks for the tips on...

Good afternoon all! After a month of heat in the Arizona desert I'm back. Whilst I've been away one of our banthams sadly died. Unsure why but my wife said the vet she took it too said it didn't seem to be anything infectious etc. She could have been quite old as she was a rescue. Our other...

Just decreased the flock from 7 to 5. One of my wife's colleague's was after some more for his flock. So he's taken the aggressive leghorn and the brown chick. He has a flock of 7 already which are completely free range so they went to a decent home. Leaves us with the other leghorn two banthams...

The egg it hatched from was a lot bigger then the eggs I get from my bantams though. Or am I wrong in thinking that it should be a full sized breed?

Now two weeks old. The white one is getting feathers slot quicker then the others then the one with white and black wings followed by the white and brown. In other news I am also acting as daddy daycare as mum is away this weekend and next. Seems my 1 year old has grasped the concept of...

yep, well the new coop was because the leghorns were being very unfriendly with the new chicks, so had to be separated. the other coop i have won't get moved with us as it is on the way out and very old, so will do while we are here but not worth taking. For now it lets us have our meat and egg...

Another update. Have built a second coop/run to be used by the leghorns as the egg flock with the two banthams and Theo chicks in the other run as the meat and broody flock. For pictures see the coop thread thing (the long one) One of the chicks died during the night on Wednesday so down to...

Here is a picture of two of our mystery chicks. The pale one has feathery feet. Also got one more mystery and a rir with the other hen and three eggs. One mystery chick hatched with its yolk unabsorbed (pic below) and is now with a farmer friend in his brooder so fingers crossed. No...

Short update. We now have 3 hatched all a day apart and two more are starting to hatch now too. So 5 of 8 isn't too bad one is a rehire island red the other 4 I'm not sure as they were the mystery eggs the Mrs got. We had to separate the hens with the eggs/chicks as one of the leghorns got hold...

So of the 4 "new" eggs, one hatchet last night, one hatched mid morning today. No movement from the other two. But the two so far look different types etc so likely that those four aren't due at the same time. The original four are still there. Day 21 is tomorrow so hopefully we get something...

Afternoon all! So an update. We went away for the weekend to visit my grandparents. When we got back one of our hens had abandoned the eggs we had under her (she was just sitting in another nest box). The 4 eggs were cold so we stuck her back on them and the wife in a 'panic' went and got some...

Candled the eggs today. As far as I can tell all 4 seem to be doing well. One of the eggs is really dark but it had a decent air pocket and I'm pretty sure I could see a really dark patch on the shadow (not technical terms but I assume you guys know what I mean) Two of them were moving around a...

haha, i know they are all going to be very nice, but if all 4 hatch it will double our numbers. I'm trying to get it into my wifes head that they are for food even the ones we will be keeping are for eggs, and we already have a constant surplus of eggs with only 4 layers!
