Correct, it should be done every 4-6 months, but seeing how we didn’t even get 2 months of efficacy with it, it wasn’t worth the several hundred dollar expense to repeat it in our case.
I am not the person who posted the above response, but I did give my rooster the hormone implant when he was a little over a year old- mostly because he became aggressive. The vet said he was already full of hormones at this age and had already started with his bad (aggressive) habits, and the...
Wow I wouldn’t have guess he would still be fertile! Glad you posted the update. The chicks are adorable!
It will be interesting to see how he does now that spring is starting. Will the implant still keep his hormones low or will he crow and mount the hens more? I know my roo got his surge of...
Yes I definitely should have done it sooner, but he didn’t start jumping at me until around a year of age. Before that he was very well behaved around people.
For my roo the implant was given in the back of the neck. He gave an injection to numb up the area first, put the implant in via a large needle, then put some tissue glue over the area to make sure it didn’t migrate out. It didn’t seem to bother my roo at all.
Yes you are correct, it’s typically repeated in 6 months. But I’m my roo’s case I didn’t see a big enough improvement for a long enough time to merit the expense of another implant.
My rooster was given the suprelorin 4.7mg implant this past spring to help calm his human aggression and keep him from overmating the hens so badly. At the time he was a little over a year of age. He has always crowed a lot but it’s not a problem where we live.
By the next morning I already...
Awesome!! And good luck!! IMO there are not enough avian or large animal vets out there. I’m not sure what type of vet you want to be, but if you ever come across good studies in this area, or rooster health in general, be sure to post here!
Yes, fortunately I’m a vet tech and get a courtesy discount. Full price going rate for the implant- which could last 6-12 mos- is $160. My Christmas $ is burning a hole in my pocket anyways lol.
But I’m still deciding... if I go with the implant I will update how it goes.
Yeah I found a few other posts about it, this one seemed to have the most recent info of the ones I came across. Plus I’m curious to see how things worked out for them.
And yes you are right, penning him would be easiest and cheapest- I would have to split the coop and run, or rotate who was...
I know this is a old post, but has anyone who have tried this on their rooster still around to comment?
I’m curious about its use to decrease mating for a rooster that’s 9 months old and overmating select hens, just to get him through these “overly amorous” times. Done a lot of research online...
