I have fresh ones do that in the brooder. They get tired and sleep where they are at if it is warm. I have had them fall asleep with their head in the food.

Most likely they were just checking the newbie out. They use their beaks to explore like little kids use hands to touch everything. Just check on it after a while and make sure they are not drawing blood. It will do better with its hatch buddies. Usually within a day I can never tell who was who.
That was my breeding season last year. I was over run in cockerels.

the foam things are freakin expensive I am going to be spending a small fortune for the eggs so might be worth the extra protection. All mine have come double boxed with bubble wrap etc. Are the foam inserts that much better? Where is Oz to chime in...
