Will they free range at all or is the coop/run their daily home? I would think a dozen or so would be okay. It's really up to you. I keep feed in the coop - I have PVC feeders. I keep water in the coop year round and add another fount in the run during the summer. We have a pond and there's...
I wish I could help! I know close to zero about 4H. I do, however, think if you reach out to them they'll tell you what their expectations are. As for quality show stock, I'd network around. Your club may have suggestions. There's a lot of folks on the MN threads that have great stock as well...
Minnie, you should try your hand at Muscovys. I keep mine more for pest control and general amusement, but I heard their meat is very tender and tasty. They're much bigger than a cayuga duck, but I don't think the cost to feed them would be much more if at all.
If your neighbors don't mind and he's not obnoxious about it, keeping him may be a non-issue.
I usually have a Silkie on hand and I swear they don't lay eggs! Them and my Cochins. Anti-egg layers.
I'll tell ya what....if you find yourself near the East Bethel area, I'd strongly consider it. However, the story I'm going to tell my husband is that you begged me to take her and I said FINE. Make sure you have the same story as me
Single dose or daily for a period of time? Egg withdrawl? I need to get some so I can worm them in the next few weeks.
I don't. Hopefully someone else can help you out.
@holm25 , you still have that Pekin?! I should have taken her home with me!
I never had any issues until recently. I've been running a duck buffet here for something. I saw a possum about two weeks ago, but haven't sighted it again since then. My game cameras haven't picked anything up. One of my Cochins also didn't make it back to the coop tonight, but sometimes...
We do, too, but they don't go too far. They're spoiled and well fed. We also have a marsh/pond that they venture around and eat bugs all day. If they started going too far and bugging the neighbors, I'd have to figure something else out.
Here's my duck pen set-up. It would work for chickens as well. I still want to get chicken wire around the exposed chain link, but this is where I'm at with it now. It's a 10x15 dog kennel.
Everybody does something different. There's a lot of great threads on BYC with different ideas as well.
A lot of these pictures are more of a work in progress to what we have now. Actually, I'm always changing something but you'll find that's how it goes when you or your flock have different needs.
We now have hardware cloth on the lower 3 feet of our run covering the fencing already there. The...
