DH was working on a pop door opener for me using an Arduino Uno for me using a heat and light sensor so it would only open with a certain percentage of light. Then I up and changed my door and got Egyptian Fayoumis so the project is shelved for the moment although it might be able to be...

@jthornton, visiting your gnipsel.com page. My husband is heavily into arduino and used to be into raspberry pi. He is also into 3D printing which I think is his main interest right now and experimenting on making a wind turbine that is using a stepper motor as an alternator. He gave me a 1"...

Hey Missouri folks! haven't checked in for a while. @jthornton, I agree, we have the same predators around us here plus we have the occasional cougar wandering through. Steel coated coop and hot wires keep the predators at bay. Then there is this...

Oops, thank you and sorry. I must have cornfused it with a twister that hit central IL in the fall the same year I think. It was in November so I got that month wrong too.....duh. That's what I thought. I remember vaguely reading that fall tornados generally don't pack much of a punch.

Glad you are all safe, @karenerwin. A little too close for comfort though. My husband and I have only been Missourians since 08. So we remember the Joplin tornado happened in September. Is this a rare occurrence for this time of year in Missouri?

All is well here in Macon county. We had fog roll in about 11AM, then it rained most of the afternoon. We did have high winds most of the night. Some gusts in the mid 40s officially but the way the house was shaking I think it was higher here. Thankfully no damage though. My chicken coop roof...

Glad to hear that everyone came thorough the storms alright! Closest one to us was in Purdin which is 60-ish miles west and a bit south from us. I stood out in the field and watched the storm move to the north and thought the clouds looked a bit peculiar. Sure enough came in and we listened to...

Good morning. Same thing here. Where is summer anyway? Ollie is adorable. We have a half Siamese cat who is 21 years old and diabetic for 5 years. His name is Johnny Cash, the Man in Black. Yep, as black as Ollie and quiet the character even at 21.

Thank you so much. I doubt if the local vet has even heard of this. No idea of Pythiosis and I hear you about the lighter wallets. Three days for Sidney in the University of Missouri Veterinary Hospital averaged out at over 1000 dollars per day. I tell ya guys, these doctors and the staff...

Sigh. DH told me that if I got rid of all my chickens I could have ducks....there are days where I have to admit it is a tempting offer...like when the roosters are trying to kill one another. @OhZark Biddies Thank you so much for that heads up. What is going on this summer anyway? Us losing...

We have four cattle dogs who go in and out so many times a day through their doggy door that I should be thankful hat we don't have more flies than we do. On their behalf though they do chase down and snatch moths and the like out of mid air. Kind of impressive to see.

Have you tried Cackle Hatchery? Or were you looking for a private seller?

I think the flies have actually outnumbered the mosquitos for the moment here. DH is sitting beside me on the sofa with an electric tennis racket type of fly swatter in hand and I have a regular flyswatter. I'm starting to think I need to stage them through the house. The sun of earlier was...

I want to know the answer to that one too! 7 inches since Friday here. I had no idea when we migrated here in 08 that we adopted a monsoon state! Bachelor coop is flooded. I have no idea how the rain got in as it is a metal clad shed....unless it came up from underground via the cracks in the...

Thank you Shaw. We had never heard of it before and from what I'm reading many vets haven't either. The emergency vet mentioned it as a possibility but at that point was leaning more towards a foreign body and so were we. In less than 48 hours it progressed at a rapid and deadly pace. I read...

I wanted to write a quick post here. Two weeks ago one of our cattle dogs that we rescued along with her 3 brothers and 1 sister when they were 3 months old from an Amish puppy mill became critically ill. Sid was 2 years old. The picture of health. Suddenly she was vomiting non stop so we took...

Morning everyone. I haven't stopped by for awhile and thought I drop in and say howdy. We are getting a bit of freezing rain up here in Macon county along with a bunch o'wind. I'm afraid to go out and see what my run netting looks like this morning. But at least it's going to rebound over the...

I was amazed at how fast mine could dump the feed out of a PVC feeder. I did one also, not like yours tho. It was an L shaped one with the hols drilled in the horizontal pipe. I finally ditched it. It's just so disheartening to see 5-8 pounds of feed scattered on the floor.

I tried a feeder similar to that one, JT. I only have one large bird, an Ameraucana the rest are bantams or small bantam crosses along with the medium sized Fayoumi's. All the smaller birds hopped up into he feeder and scratched away to their heart's content. I had to go to a hanging feeder to...
