When my Muscovies first discovered the snow, they ate it then washed it down with water.

I won't be giving barley to my Muscovies. I would rather be safe. I'll just stick with giving them the same food. I mix it the same way for both the chickens and ducks, and chicks (which is ground smaller in the Vita-Mix) and everyone does fine. I just thought some variety might be good, but...

@Chicken Egg 17 Thank you so much for the link! I had purchased a 50 lb. bag last week with the other grains, and haven't used it yet. I won't be using in the chicken feed. @chickengirl72 posted the question at just the right time, otherwise I would not have known. I will probably use...

Is there something different with digesting barley from other grains?

Before the pond froze over. They now spend all day around the pond drinking from the un-frozen edges (when it's not too cold outside). They dream of these days...again....soon.

First year with ducks over the winter. Going through more pine shavings now, but will have plenty of carbon material for the gardens, which was lacking.

@Chicken Egg 17 Here's how we dug the most recent pond. It was actually re-dug, after originally being lined with clay. I put steps going all the way to the bottom if I need to get to the bottom of the pond for cleaning or whatever. It is about 3 feet deep at the deepest point. I would...

@Ren2014 Here's the pic of the ponds after modifying the waterfall. Still doing some rock work around the perimeter. The one in the foreground is the pond re-dug this year, and the liner was put in just in September. Without a filter it doesn't take long to get the pond smell. Replaced...

I have noticed in the making of our ponds, that the tendency is to go bigger than previously planned. We started with a 50 gallon pre-formed liner, now we have two ponds connected by a waterfall that hold about 5,000 gallon water total.

Interesting. Our lower clay lined pond held water last year, but this spring noticed it would not, so instead of making the clay thicker, decided to just get a liner, and dug it much bigger. There's no filter. I need to get some updated pics, since just re-arranging flagstones on the...

It's probably infected and will need an antibiotic. The duck should be taken to a veterinarian.

Beautiful! Is it lined with clay? Our ponds are also connected by a waterfall, with the water circulating the same way.

@FaerieGlynne Please explain what the pills are for. Most important is to keep their wounds clean, and keep them comfortable and protected. If you have to, modify their house so that no predator can ever get at them again at night.

You could be sensing that there is something wrong in general, not necessarily the eye. I believe twice I've experienced with my chickens looking into their eyes, and something seemed wrong, and shortly after that chicken was sick.
