Thanks cubalaya. Do you have them staked down? Dd and I encountered a bear over the weekend when coming up from collecting eggs. I was thinking about staking down brood 'triangle' pens but I don't think it would help if the bear decided on chicken dinner

Beautiful picture of her. I hope the rest of your flock can bring you as much happiness as she did

Cubalaya- can you post a pic of the triangle brood pen from the other side please? Yours looks so nice! I'd like to build a few myself. I made an apartment deal for broodies but put in a roost in each. Bad idea- momma accidentally killed a chick jumping down once and if I have a new broody...

Check protein levels of the feed and adjust for the season. Winter=higher protein, warmer months regular layer feed. Always have free choice oyster shell available. I tend to agree about the aforementioned suggestion of husbandry being off somewhere but not so snippy. There's a nicer way than...

You could always raise a couple of hogs with the extra milk too

Are we related?!? But just think how many chicks/ chickens/ hatching eggs or supplies could be had for the cost/care of the cow. That's how I talk myself out of large livestock (It didn't work when we started into hogs!)

I don't show rabbits so forgive my ignorance- what's with covering the head?

No dress yet but I'll be stopping at a few thrift stores tomorrow on my way to pick up our pork from the processor I cleaned a house for someone yesterday and the lady brought out a few formal dresses that her daughter my age wore way back when. Was willing to give one but my dd sent me "think...

Not chicken related but here goes...anyone have a formal dress for end of middle school dance willing to sell cheap? Ebay has some for like $3 plus shipping but they would be coming from China/ Hong Kong and may not arrive in time. We don't plan to go all out for this one since high school is...

I say they are the same thing. We got a bundle of mixed hardwood for $150, it's odds and ends that weren't cut exact sold on the cheap. Enough to do about a 20'x20' building or so since we used less than half on outside and framing of a 10'x10'. I hear ya on compressor tools but in my case...

Dh learned fast that if something of his is missing just ask me He bought himself the 18v power tool combo kit a couple of years ago but it became mine pretty fast. I don't recall him hardly using them actually. But that's also how he gets to buy new things- I've "stolen" his

And you don't want to try to be cheap and get sawmill lumber for a big project either! Hard as all get out to get nails into, screws aren't strong enough for some boards without pilot holes and it is so HEAVY by yourself. So much money on bent nails...

Haha! You are so right...all those articles on how inexpensive it is to raise chickens and well...maybe not if you don't have 20 acres with your chickens in the center to free range 100% Bedding- hay, straw, shavings, endless options. Feed-flockraiser, layer crumbles or mash or pellets, oyster...

You got that right! First load of lumber for my planned barn is calling my name but I can't dig 3 feet down to set posts;-) The chickens are going to absolutely love me next winter- that and perhaps the waterers won't freeze as often so easier for me...and dh loves the part of the blueprints...

I had an 11 pound New Zealand rabbit when I was a teen. (Actually I had over 20 different rabbits:-)) Every litter she had she'd kill them by mauling, stomping or eating. I worked at a vet clinic so received info and help but had to hand raise her last 2 litters before finally separating her...

Just a reminder since we're all thinking about egg numbers- Spring (well, almost!) is an ideal time to worm your chickens. After hunkering down in cold weather for a few months worms can be an issue although we have waited for thise eggs to come again. I received a 3 month old BLP pair in Dec...

"Collecting"- hilarious! I think we'd all be Noah's of chickens if we had no constraints:-) I'd love to 'collect' a pair of every single breed of chicken! Imagine how many that would be, all so unique. And we could charge admission to let folks visit;-)

I know, I know- more advice than needed but here goes:-) Even if you get very good quality rabbits to begin with remember that your husbandry (your care of the animals) will make or break you. I met someone a few years ago that claimed.her daughter sold show quality pedigreed rabbits of various...

Mt. Healthy has had many Salmonella issues over the years. You can check the CDC website and put hatcheries in the search bar. That said, my first chickens years ago came from there via local TSC and were aewsome.
