Absolutely. I am not npip, but I am also not in the business of selling chickens. I may be one day. As an educated consumer, when shopping to add to my closed flock, NPIP is a must, and if you have tested for MS/MG, you really have my attention. I have happened across a swap a time or two and...

Pretty sure VA is one of the more strict states about transporting poultry. I think legally you may not transport poultry (hatching eggs included) without the clean and clear, proper permits. Not 100% sure.

No, nothing happened. I have broody hens of all temperaments. They are just animals doing what is natural to them. For example, my EE hen is very gentle and kind, even to a fault. I can put her in with any age chick and she will get along just fine. When she is broody, she is just as nice to...

Easter eggers have done well here. Also welsummers. My wellie hens are friendly and just flighty enough to do well ranging. They also blend in well. Noisy gals, but the first to alert if there are problems. They are also fierce mothers.

I had 3 hens and will never get them again. They were hawk targets, so the overhead protection is a must. They would also go off on their own, often deep into the woods, making a racket the whole time. All three eventually were hawk food.

I like welsummers, but I must admit, my EE's are kinda fun. You never know what you're gonna get!

My guess is a dark fishing spider, though could be a wolf spider. Harmless, unless you have a reaction to spider bites. http://www.spiders.us/species/dolomedes-tenebrosus/ These hang out on my broody coop and are HUGE. Their eyes reflect my flashlight, which is creepy.

I got my order confirmation from Sand Hill I put 5 delawares to finish out my order, just because everyone says they are so sweet. They are booked solid, so they are subbing Blue Orpingtons, which is absolutely OK with me!! With any luck, the week of 5/10, I should have 10 Welsummers, 10...

Not sure where you are located, but I recall seeing a craigslist ad for Blue Ameraucanas and hatching eggs in Rocky Mount or Boones Mill over the spring/summer. They were npip.

I didn't even think of seeds… I just spent the last 30 minutes browsing. Too many options!! Big garden and canning plans this year! I was mostly concerned about chicks. I have ordered from both MM and Ideal in the past, and had no problems at all with them. I may splurge and get express...

Thinking of placing an order with Sandhill for this spring. Anyone ever have issues with them shipping to VA? Did you use priority or express shipping?

LOL! We're seriously just keeping enough here for eggs for ourselves, maybe a few for dinner. I'll let broodies hatch what they will and keep some if I need more layers and sell what I don't need. I do have a 4x4 coop for broodies that won't work hatching in the coop with the flock and will...

The new coop is 10 x 10. We laugh because we have been planning to build this coop for the last two years. It's not far from being done now though, and will last half of forever!

From Botetourt County! How do you like your welsummers? I have two hatchery wellies that I adore. Both went broody this past summer and had successful hatches. One is still mothering her seven 6 week old chicks. The other hatched guineas, which she still hangs out with after going back to laying...

Small world it is! What kind of chickens do you have? We have a mixed flock of hatchery chickens, random breeds but most of them are easter eggers and easter egger mixes.
