All my girls and boy are doing fine in Dahlgren. I almost went out to put a heat lamp on them last night. I checked on BYC and everything was "no heat" for my older flock. So I guess I'm glad I didn't do it. I want my stock to be hardy. Their waterer is heated, but not the coop. Time will...

Yes. The skinning part was simple once I figured out where their leg/feathers started since they all had feathered legs. It was the next step that I needed help with like identifying where to cut off the meat since I tried to do the "no gutting" method and just fillet off the meat. So really...

I'd love to have someone near me to help and teach me how to butcher properly. I skinned my last set of roosters but I know I missed lots of meat.

I'm in King George County. We've been letting them find their own cool spots and keeping the water filled. They hangout in the shade under the peach tree and by the coop in the dirt.

We had a groundhog suddenly make an appearance at the shed in our outer run about a week ago. We've had groundhogs in that spot in the past, but hadn't seen any for about 5 yrs. I know they allegedly are "mostly herbivores" but I've also read where they eat small animals. I read that they...

My Vanilla Ice (silky/White Leghorn/Arucana) pullet lays a darker blue green egg like your bottom one. However she's just returned to laying this day after having been broody and her egg today resembled your top egg. So it could be from the same girl. It would make sense that she laid them both...

I wasn't sure how to process our excess roosters either - watched videos and read as much as I could. But there's no substitute for actually doing the job and learning as you go. I learnt quite a bit about the process and how videos are generally made by people who have done it before so don't...

Anyone near King George with day old LF? I have a broody that just won't break. I'm trying to get 3 or 4 day olds for her to raise. Straight run is fine.

The NuStock I used was in a tube, probably the same stuff, just different format. It stinks bad, but does the job. I had a silky that was cut on both of her sides by the large Maran roo and his amorous nature. One of the wounds wasn't too bad but the other was a big gaping wound. I first...

I know my WL/EE mix girl lays a very pretty large light blue egg. Her mom (EE) lays a smaller closer to blue/green egg and her daughter lays an even smaller even darker green egg (silky mix). Mixing in the white layer helped with the size and color.

Your tax bill should say whether you are in a city or the county. The municipalities near us have signage along the road stating what county or city you are entering, so a drive around your neighborhood might help. In VA most places are county governed, but a few populous areas are cities...

I've put NuStock on cuts and that helps heal it right up and will help regrow the feathers.

Yes. Have been having the same happening here. My younger and larger cockerel took over this past weekend. I guess he got tired of the silky roo getting all the girls and finally made a stand. Both were bloodied in the evening on the roost and it looked like I had been slaughtering chickens...

You could go with Welsummer or Marans for dark brown. I've been trying for awhile now to get a dark layer. Finally managed to hatch one Blue Splash Copper Maran. She just started laying a couple of weeks ago. She's a sweet and large girl.
