I don’t find them slow growing, but they are not large birds. They are one of the smallest “large fowl” breeds and do not look much larger than bantams.
Wild and flappy, but that’s about it. They’re not mean, they just are really annoyed at being handled. I honestly can’t think of anything else. Very smart and self-sufficient, very tough but not aggressive. Good family instincts in hens and roos both, in my experience.
The bird with leakage is the picture she sent me. None of my birds had leakage when then left my property. I had carefully culled through two years of breeding, and these were to be my breed stock going forward. They were the very best I had.
Hey all. Having a bit of trouble. Two weeks ago I sold my last four honas to a lady: three hens and a roo. Today she says that I sold her two roos. The birds were over a year old, probably two years old (need to check hatch dates). But she believes she was “screwed over” even though she hasn’t...
I’ve decided to get out of honas but wanted to post a pic of my breed cock for critique before I sell out. I think he’s still in molt (saw pin feathers) and he’s a bit too thin but I’m curious about your opinions on his form overall. He’s strutting a bit and I love it. He’s blind in that eye and...
I haven't had any trouble from mine. What is your line?
I've got a broody that is kicking the eggs out right before they hatch and starting over. That's making me crazy. :barnie
Mine are not sweet and gentle, but no human aggression. They are catlike, to me: not lap birds, don't enjoy being handled (but they'll tolerate it some), and keep to themselves. They like to observe the action from just out of arms' reach. They are not easy to sneak up on. They aren't bullies...
Such nice pictures gapey! Most of mine were in the 6mos range before they developed color in their feathers, and that's when some of the blackest combs turned mulberry. Every time I thought I had selected the very best breeders, it would change again.
I love the silver hackles. I've seen them...
I put One-eyed Jack in his own tractor today. He's still pretty thin but his energy is up, so I think he'll be ok. I put him with three hens.
I noticed today that some of my hens have faded spots in their hackles, I'm guessing this is the same that presents as gold or silver in the roos? I...
