DIY CABINET COOLER INCUBATOR How we did it and TEST RUN Ready Set GO!

You mean like this: This is my hatcher, built with lots of @Sally Sunshine inspired ideas. The main advantage of a vertical config is for the turner. You can make a horizontal turner (search for homemade incubator turners on youtube), but the capacity is going to be a lot lower than...

I forgot to mention they come in different diameters, would a 4 inch one fit? Just search Amazon and eBay for "4 inch duct fan".

If shopping for egg trays, also look at Cutler Supply and Hawkhead Hatchery Equipment I bought 20 trays from Hawkhead for $1 each + shipping. Ask for "ChickMaster 48 Setting trays". It can be handy to have extra trays on hand.

That's only the motor intended as a replacement in a commercial cabinet incubator, you'd need to rig up the of the turning mechanism yourself.

The trays Sally used hold 48 eggs. Getting really large eggs like turkeys is a challenge. If you drilled a hole through the top of the incubator in the right place, you could extend the rod that connects the trays and does the turning now. If you make it long enough and use some sort of clip...

First, can you see the pictures on your computer or phone, using explorer or some file managment program? If so, remember their filenames. Now, start your message and when you are at the place you want a picture, click the "insert image" icon in the bottom row of the banner right above this text...

mattman1978 - Great post! Do you have a sort of schematic for how the controller, relay, probe and fuses are wired together? Or maybe you can just explain in more detail for me. I have been working on a homemade hatcher and using an STC-1000, a more "all in one" solution than what you have done...

Ours are still too young to make a lot of racket, but I don't think they are noisy at night. Guineas are the same, they make an awful racket when disturbed, but are otherwise quiet at night. Of course the definitive answer would be from the people over on the pea forum. I'd believe them over me ;)

You should keep them, peas are great!

Why would you turn your incubator off? Did you run out of eggs?

Why must you auction those chicks? I've seen dehumidifying "buckets" of some sort of salt (I suppose) that absorbs the water and it drips into the bottom of the bucket. Not sure where that would go in the incubator, but it's the only idea I've got for ya.

I "dry hatch", though that's a bit of a mis-nomer, IMO. RH should not be a fixed value for every case, there are variables. You can gauge whether the humidity is right be either tracking the weight, or watching the size of the air cells. The "Hatching 101 by Sally Sunshine" link in the posts...

Would this be a good application for one of those temperature sensing "guns" ? I know they are not accurate at any distance, but I think they register quickly and so you could scan a number of spots with a single opening of the incubator. Or maybe I'm just looking to justify a new toy. Those...

As a heat source, the actual wattage of a bulb is what determines how much heat is produced. So a 13 watt CFL (Compact Florescent Lamp - the "spirally" ones) produced only 1/3 a much heat as a 40 watt incandescent bulb. It may say it's equivalent to a 60 watt, but that is light output, not heat...

Can I add that another upside to this, over other thermostats, is how movable the sensor is. You'd better get the other ones located correctly with regard to the eggs, fans, cool spots, etc, because moving them it hard. But the probe for an STC-1000 can be easily moved, the most you'll have to...

I'm buying a red LED flashlight to see if that disturbs them less when checking for chicks in the incubator. It also might help when I'm chicken hunting at night (the only time I have a chance of catching those free range roosters).

It seems like whenever I block off the light, the chicks already hatched get quiet and rest. Perhaps it's the change in lighting that disturbs them, they certainly sleep under a brooder light ok. Maybe I'm extrapolating too much from my own experience, I only sleep when it's dark.

Yes, do a hatcher with me! I have the 150 qt cooler on it's way. I'm going to make a removable hw cloth shelf and put trays of water under it. Another "shelf" resting on the built in panels near the top to hold sliding glass access panels. Holes in both ends for ventilation and a removable cage...
