I'm a SAHM working on turning our little patch of grass into a fully functional homestead. Currently only chickens and Nigerian Dwarfs, but hoping to expand eventually and add some Dexter cows and a horse or two. DH is a commercial airline pilot so is conveniently not around much to interfere...

I have two "black broiler" hens dh picked up at Southern States last fall to process. He procrastinated so long they started laying. :/ they're giving us an egg a day each though so I suppose they are earning their keep. They're still going in the pot this fall but they bought themselves a...

So he's of the Crock Pot Chicken variety? :) Not saying he will end up in a pot, but not promising he wont either. My dad said he kept coming over hanging around 'his girls'. After a while he found out which neighbor he belonged to and the guy said he could have him. Since he isn't even...

Hello everyone! My dad has just informed me he rescued a rooster - but can't keep it due to chicken laws where he lives. Any ideas on what breed this guy is? That's a Minorca behind him and a Light Brahma front left. **Edited to add: We plan on keeping him at least until our new chicks...

Hollow and Tammy: Have you used any of the breeders on the ameraucana.org website? Just curious since I figured I'd start there. Curious what, if any, experience anyone has with any of them. Looks like I'm in good company with my breed selection! Great minds think alike I guess. Either of...

If you're going with a hatchery I'd say McMurray hatchery is my preferred. I've gotten from Ideal and they're good too, but McMurray seems to produce prettier chickens with slightly better structure. They're both good though. There's this one in Wake Forest but I've never used them...

@ CruchyJeepMama imho it isn't cost effective to raise your own meat chickens if you are having to pay for them to be butchered. We had ours butchered the first go-round and it cost us $5 per bird for the butchering. Add that to the $2.50 per chick and about $15 (unmedicated non-organic) - $30...

Hey all! Been a while. No way I can catch up with all the posts I've missed so hello to the new people, and hello again to the other people. ; ) Our flock is currently at 28. This time last year it was at 6. It has taken us a LOT of fluctuations to get this far and I don't even have my...

Hey everyone! Just popping in to say hello so you don't all forget about me :D Been crazy busy lately. Our shipment of 18 chicks seems to have settled into 16. Two of our pullets are starting to look like roos - I'll get pics one day... At least they were kind enough to stick to the breeds...

@Banriona "Your possible Speckled Sussex could also be a possible Easter Egger. My speckled Sussex have always been darker as chicks but different parentage can yield different colored chicks!" You could be right. I ordered 2 Ee's and 2 Sussex. There are two that look like the one in the...

Went to check on the chick before I went to bed. He'd been quiet for the last couple hours so I figured he'd tucked in for the night. He was dead on his back. :( Send him in for autopsy or no?

After doing some reading I figured I'd go with the easiest to treat and work my way down the list. Force fed him some electrolytes and he's much improved already. Already seen him eat and drink on his own. Perhaps some acidosis from too much heat? Upon further inspection the other three of...

So we got a batch of chicks on May 27th from Murray McMurray. Ordered 15 in a variety of breeds. They sent 18 - all the extras were Polish. We lost one of the Silver laced Polish a day or two after they arrived but the rest have been healthy and happy and growing beautifully. We got four...

Welcome new flockers!! It's official!! All 8 of my girls are laying! I suspected as much, but we've only gotten between 4-6 on any given day lately. Today we got 8! Woot! Very exciting stuff. Still can't tell the difference between my Brahma's egg and the Orps though. Aaaand.... with...
