Have 2 Pilgrim pips!! I'd thought nothing was going to happen, been that kind of month! But I also counted wrong on days. Pretty cool they count better than me! One is even cheeping thru the shell. Fingers crossed!!
Hmm, I'm going to try this with one of my geese who went broody this weekend. Was wondering what to do. Feel bad messing her nest, she's made it so nicely. But not sure I want her to just sit there for weeks already!
I think one of my yearlings has gone broody, which I didn't expect yet! May slip some eggs back under her and/or duck eggs. As long as she's going to just sit there...
So apparently I have 24 Pilgrim eggs in a bator for fertility testing. And if the boys are doing their jobs.... That's going to be a lot of smiling fuzzies!
OK, I want to set more of my goose eggs, but some of the nicest ones are dirty. Just mud dirt, but some have quite a lot on them. I know I'm not supposed to wash eggs before setting them, but... Ever? Do I just set the dirty eggs? And then let them get all slimy when/if I mist?? I'm...
Kind of surprised but at least 3 of my first 5 eggs of the year are developing. Hard to tell on a 4th but keeping it for now. Got a bigger bator to get some of the rest of the more recent eggs going to see how they do.
Finally have the groups in their private pens. Golly (young gander...
I want to try cooking with them, just haven't had time dolor more than frozen pizza and salad for weeks it seems! Hopefully life slows down at work soon.
Thanks! I just want something bigger to do fertility checks on the geese because I have a counter full of goose eggs! Have started adding them to the eggs I give folks at work for eating so less stressed over 'wasting them' since the girls are becoming very generous. Of course knowing me I...
How much monitoring/adjusting do they typically take. I know that's a very broad question. I'm tempted to get one so I can load it up with Pilgrim eggs but I sometimes work 12-14hr shifts so got some Brinsea Mini (i.e. set-and-forget) bators to minimize missing big issues. But they're so...
Thx! A Bator is sitting empty and cleaned as of an hour ago but hoping to have some shipped eggs early next week for it. Might just be able to squeeze in a test... And then really get that cooler bator made to move any good ones to!
Ok, if I break down and put some Pilgrim eggs in the Bator, would I be able to candle them early next week to see if any are developing or would that be too early?
*Four* eggs this morning! 2 in a sort of nest in the chicken coop, then 2 others randomly laying in the sheep pen and near a gate. Too cool. Now the daily egg hunt is even MORE fun! Just a little bit.
And I can fit 5 in a Mini Eco so I'm going to do that and see what they look like in a...
Pilgrim egg #3! Pretty sure who is laying, they tend to stay to themselves as a pair these days. I definitely know the female of that pair layed todays egg since the rest of the flock are in their 'time out' pen for heading down to the road again. She's laying an egg every other day so...
Oh, if someone wants to go broody I'll let them! The main group is more interested in exploring. The pair left behind are the best bets so far. Guess I could get them in a yard of their own with a pool and see what happens. Of course I just put runners in the yard I was going to use so have...
I haven't seen this particular pair that I think are the parents do anything but pair off and stay on the outskirts of the main group. The ones definitely having fun in the stock tank aren't laying a thing. <sigh>
Might put them in and see what happens. Would hate to have a singleton hatch...
