I think this is a situation where you don't understand until you've had some silkies, they just show up and demand adoration and you are helpless to resist.
This can be arranged
#TEAMSILKIES
Exactly! 🤔 I contemplate getting out of silkies at least once a week, but they're so dang cute and I have a ton invested in them and especially this year I finally have breeding pens I'm excited about.
Hubby just suggested last night that we build another coop like the one my dad built, which is an excellent idea! If we make it a touch bigger I can split it in half and have 2 really nice sized walk in coops for eh-hem, maybe one to be for the Marans... :barnie I should not be adding another...
Ok fine! Very late update on things over here in the Meep world. It seems my oldest hens are either not so fertile or very good at evading the rooster. Out if all the eggs I've set from them over 3 hatches I have a whopping 1 egg developed and hatched, it's super cute though looks like a...
Yesterday when I was filling the feeding in the old ladies coop, I saw an egg in the nesting box, promptly forgot to grab it and finally remembered it again tonight. When I opened the door I was shocked to find 8 eggs in there! The old ladies are restarting the egg machines :celebrate it's...
Happy New Years Eve!
This year wasn't always easy, but I think I'm in a decent position with my flock heading into the new year. I've learned a lot about Mareks, vaccinating, plans - good, bad, and failed.
2024 recap:
This year (July) I lost my longest running favorite hen, she was 4 1/2...
I have 4 broodies I'm trying to break, I haven't taken this girl out of her pen yet, she's a very dedicated broody as you can see... I think she missed a few important days of broody school. These two photos are from last night and this morning.
Just a post mostly for my own future reference.
I have minimal light added to the three standalone coops. The light is mostly to help them get into the coop in the evening and give me light for chores. It is one single really dim bulb, I'm not sure if it is enough to count as "added light to...
Probably not the best color to cross her with, but I have my Ermine cockerel in there. You can just see his tail in there. I'm assuming they'd produce some blues, blacks, and paint and blue paint and I'm not sure about leakage and stuff or what her rusty colors will do to the mix. They will...
Here's our oldest EE, she will be 4 this coming spring. She's just coming through a molt, I'm hoping to set a few of her eggs in 2025 :jumpy
And Chonkers ready for bed way too early in the day 🤣
Oooh! Chickies are on the way :pop and yes, buy that 2nd incubator (may I recommend a Brinsea Ovation Connect?) and get it going!!!
Whooooooo! I can't wait until you have wee little for some photos! You'll be 2 months ahead of me :wee
And, if he's building 1 more coop, we might as well just do 2 to get that out of the way upfront :yesss: I'm not sure where to put them though :gig I've already lined most of our back perimeter fence with coops. The next spot I could put coops I wouldn't be able to have water or power, I would...
He is over the top happy :love my bachelor "flock" is down to 3 boys, so not much of a flock anymore. Everyone has been moved to various coops with ladies, or mainly for reasons of poor behavior, they've earned their dinner invite. I think if I had just one more coop... lol, it would be...
