I can keep them, but not all are show quality and there is no way I need that many cockerels running around. We also have Seramas and our layer flock. We are keeping the two best SQ cockerels.

I got three dozen eggs from a breeder. 27 hatched. 24 of them are cockerels!!!!!! We made the final culls yesterday and will be keeping a gray cockerel, a mottled cockerel, and the three pullets. Now to find homes for 22 cockerels...............

I agree. I keep some birds for show, and some just for pets. My favorite Serama is definitely not SQ, but he is the sweetest cockbird I have ever had. He purrs and cuddles He throws SQ babies too

They look like Japs to me. Not all are show quality, but then again....... not every bird bred from SQ birds is SQ

I have a frizzled Jap in my avitar. She's not for sale, but I believe there is probably Serama in her background rather than Cochin. None of her chicks has had feathered legs.

    Japanese Bantam Thread!

I'm a huge fan of speckled, spotted, and frizzled birds. One of my little cockerels is looking to feather in as a blue mottled. He is a bit taller than I would like, but if he feathers in the way I hope, he will be put in a breeding pen with my black mottled hen I posted above.

If you look closely, you can see a little yellow head peeping out between her feathers.

I tried to get a video yesterday, but was laughing too hard. I let the young ones out to free range for a bit and one of my little mottled japs jumped up and latched onto one of my Brahma's tail feathers. She was so startled that she took off running with the little cockerel holding on. He...

I'm excited about the Japs we have now as well as the challenge of breeding great show birds. My boys are both in the military, so we have an "empty nest". I love the Seramas, but there is only one color that is accepted. I'm a fan of color, and ready to move on with a breed that I can take...

At he shows I've been to, what I mostly see is hatchery type Japs. There was one at the last show we went to that was taller than my Rosecomb pullets! We are just getting into the Jap breed, so I'm not sure which colors we are going to go with just yet.

Got it. Thanks! The breeder I got my eggs from has some of his birds. That's the line mine are from :)

I loved reading the "species" names! Especially the "go stones" and "cow lick"! Priceless!

    Japanese Bantam Thread!

I moved into chickens from the dog show world, so breeding quality animals for competition is very important to me. However, I also appreciate and respect the pet side of animal husbandry. We have both pet chickens and show birds. The type and quality of the Japs in my area leave a lot to be...

Because you are one of the few that actually knows this breed and will not hesitate to give a harsh critique. On my show birds, I want harsh critiques because sugar coating it won't improve my breeding program. The cockerel I posted does appear to have feathering on his legs in that pic, but I...

I agree! Sometimes it's difficult to tell if it's a bad Jap or a decent Serama :/

Yes. The Seramas should have enough leg length to allow the wings to be vertical. I knee seeing crappy Japs, so I am going to work with this breed now as well. Basically, Japs should be horizontal and Seramas should be vertical. Here is my Serama rooster. His neck is a bit longer than I would...
