    Niacin Deficiency in Waterfowl

When you have an emergency situation- where you suspect a problem already beginning, go for the liquid vitamin B complex because it's the hardest hitting and works best. You can keep that up for several weeks and when the problem is fully resolved just add some nutritional or brewer's yeast to...

    Niacin Deficiency in Waterfowl

If you're using chicken feed you should continue to add the nutritional yeast.

    Niacin Deficiency in Waterfowl

Yes, I sprinkle nutritional yeast over my ducklings food, even though the food has niacin, just to make sure they're getting ample amount. The liquid vitamin B complex will just flush through their bodies if they don't need it.

    Niacin Deficiency in Waterfowl

It's sad for those who want to keep them as pets. They're bred to be harvested at 8 weeks old for meat, so they grow super fast and their legs don't always keep up. Some ducks have no problems at all, but I've two pekins now who didn't last beyond 4 years and their legs just got weak at the end...

    Niacin Deficiency in Waterfowl

I used vet wrap (or first aid tape) which is just a stretch fabric tape that sticks to itself. I put one loop around each leg, than used a larger loop to pull the legs into proper position - that larger loop stuck to the legs and itself.

    Niacin Deficiency in Waterfowl

Do you feel it's more splay leg, where it's hard for her to stand up and the legs go out to the side, or is the leg twisted, or pigeon-toed? I would 100% get the liquid vitamin B complex going and know that it's not bad for all the ducklings to get it, so you are probably fine to leave them all...

    Niacin Deficiency in Waterfowl

It would be great if you could post a photo or video to show her leg. Are you adding the liquid vitamin B complex? That is the rescue med to give if they aren't doing well. Pekins are prone to deficiency and often the brewer's yeast is not enough. If the problem just started you should be able...

    Niacin Deficiency in Waterfowl

The one thing I wonder about with canned peas is whether there are additives like sodium - you might not want that. Do you have access to frozen peas? That's what I use, and you can easily thaw them under some warm water. Tiny bits of watermelon can also soak up the vitamin B and might work...

    Niacin Deficiency in Waterfowl

When I had a pekin about 3 weeks old who developed splay leg I didn't bother dosing her personally. I just added vitamin B complex once a day to their drinking water and food. Their water pan wasn't large at that point because they were small.

    Niacin Deficiency in Waterfowl

When giving oral meds I have had good luck with crouching down with the duck between my knees, back to me, so they can't back up. Then gently holding the beak and opening it, holding the tongue down and slowly putting the meds down the back side of the mouth. If it's more than 1 ml I usually...

Haha, I had no idea!! Thanks for pointing that out :D

    Niacin Deficiency in Waterfowl

Oops - I meant it would be a good idea when they're the appropriate age! I can't remember what that is, but it seems like they're a little young to switch to all-flock. I really can't recommend the liquid vitamin B enough - it really helped my girl - but I know others use the yeast or niacin...

    Niacin Deficiency in Waterfowl

I think that would be a great idea, if possible. In my case I was fermenting whole grains, and they weren't readily available. Also, my feed store didn't carry starter food particular to ducks. Not sure what @Ben10 's situation is, but you might need to do the extra vitamins right now to help...

    Niacin Deficiency in Waterfowl

I can't answer your questions about nutritional yeast, but if you've noticed deficiency, you should jump start them back to health by giving them liquid vitamin B complex. I had a pekin that developed splay leg when she was a baby. I had been feeding Scratch and Peck, which is also for chickens...

    Niacin Deficiency in Waterfowl

@chixNdux new mom Pekins sometimes require even more niacin - I learned this with my ducklings when one started developing splay leg. I had her on brewers yeast at the time. I think it would be helpful if you start the liquid vitamin B complex as soon as possible with her, and maybe all your...

    Niacin Deficiency in Waterfowl

Thank you so much for that thorough post! I've been thinking something like this would be super valuable here. I wish this could be printed off and sent home with every duck owner when they buy ducklings. It would save so much trouble and heartache.
