Debbie today we have to trim around the eyes of one of the little black silkies we got from you. They are so spoiled now it is hard to believe. They charge me like mini raging bulls when it's treat time. I'm still learning from them. Hope they are learning a little from us. The blue satin is...
Debbie do you ever have any that are at that stage where you just want to toss them in the tub and give them a bath so you can figure out what color they really are? They just look like they have been playing in the dirt for a week. I've got one or two like that now. :)
I got a couple of butt shots today of the two black ones. Both have black butts but different types of trail feathers showing. Still working on getting more photos. I'm going to remove the other breeds and take shots of just the 5 silkies in group shots at play. Warning. Cuteness threat.
The sun just came out so now we can try again to get photos of Debbie's Alabama silkies. The two black ones are going to get graduation portraits yet. We were out trying before the rains came and the camera malfunctioned. When I checked it out I had forgotten to put a chip in it. Fixed that.
I've got 14 green eggs in my incubator. I may just be able to do a hatchalong with green eggs hatching on 3/17/25. Who is bringing the ham? I like cloves and cherry glazing on a spiral sliced one. Then again for Easter a full incubator of silkie eggs. :)
Trap nesting was popular back in the 50's and 60's to identify hens that laid the most eggs in a breed in order to develop a proprietary strain of what were advertised to be superior. I'm not sure they are if they die quicker and have more health issues but weeding out for traits not wanted such...
I wish some one still made trap nests so that eggs could be assigned to a hen and then the chicks assigned to a hen. If only one rooster was with the hens it would be a lot easier to find breeders with those recessive genes.
I relate to the smaller and weaker chicks this morning. I need to go out and check to see how the 7 week olds fared in the great outdoors for the first time last night. I'm so anxious for them to grow up and start families.
I like the brooder a lot. Mine is a 4'x8' with 12" sides and a fish net top. Hanging feeder and water. Cutting it down to 32" wide so we can reach across to catch any we need to for pasty butt and such. It sets on top of a banquet table so we no longer have to bend down to floor level. One thing...
