The weather has been all over the place! Just a little over a week ago it was snowing and now I'm wearing a tank top and its 26 degrees C. Chickens and cats both despise it.
Lesson for future: never go to a hatchery. Not even to buy eight chicks.
Owing to my abysmal hatch rate, I decided to go get some Russian Orloff to complement my flock. They're unsexed so I might get some roosters. For $8 each it was a better price than Peavey mart ever had. The guy showed me...
So my chicks finally hatched for the Easter hatch along and one of them is having problems. His legs are stuck out to the side (splay leg most likely) but what I'm concerned about is when he's upright his head goes up as high as it can and he behaves like he can't move it. He also keeps falling...
I have a bit of news.
I'm setting Chantecler, my BYMs, and Cream Brabanter for the Easter hatch-along!
Six Chantecler eggs are in the incubator, 3 Cream Brabanter, and the rest BYM. I would like some advice on what to do about loose air sacs. Six of the Chanteclers got loose air sacs and I...
One of my CRs broke/dislocated her wing. I posted an emergency thread about it.

If anyone has experience with broken or dislocated wings please reply to the thread. At one point I helped a neighbor who had turkeys...
I just got dumped with snow, I think it's almost six inches by now. The cats are having trouble getting through it and since the chickens get a covered run they are still happy with the weather (it's not very cold, but there's a lot of snow). Purrcules is warming up on my front mat right now, he...
I do not have pictures for Pony Sunday but I do have a bit of news.
A black calf was born a few days ago. I haven't uploaded pictures yet, but it's a male (sigh) and doing well. The bad news is that another calf was born but it died or was stillborn. I don't know which because the night was...
I did not see this (probably owing to the fact that I just skip ahead to the most recent stuff) until now. I'm sorry that she went so quickly. This feels like a replay of what happened to Lhicken, except that she wasted away instead of dying suddenly. Lhicken was just a little over a year old...
I am still expecting some -40 weather. I'm kind of disappointed that it hasn't been very cold this year. Yes, I am really weird that way!
All right maybe not, but the hoar frost (also called rime - pronounced 'rhyme') is very beautiful. Also, when it's cold, sometimes you can see sun dogs. One...
It just snowed a lot. There was also fog one day and it froze on everything in sharp spikes that feels like thorns going right through my glove. Still winter here.
I think his mom licked him off so his fur was dry, and he just got a bit of snow on him.
I don't know if Red Angus is a hardy breed, because I don't know much about cows...
