Some supers with holes... I wish my bees were this productive!! From this link: https://www.honeybeesuite.com/surplus-secret-access-holes-with-platforms/ I didn’t find a good example picture of the top slot entrance that works with a telescoping cover, but it’s just a shim with a slot or...

I meant a top entrance shim might be something to try... but an entrance hole in the super with excluder, in addition to the bottom entrance works for me hang on and I’ll find some pictures/links... there’s one that comes to mind that is pretty impressive

yeah, I’d probably leave it off or maybe get a metal one... I don’t always use them, sometimes when I’ve managed to stay out of their way, and everything is going just right the queen lays a nice brood patten and the frames have that perfect band of stores in the top and the bees are leaving...

I had a friend drop off a deep full of wax moths last night... he’d set it aside then got busy with hay season and forgot it... then he noticed it the other day and saw the mess, and brought it to me to drop in my little spare ‘bee’ freezer to salvage what wax he could... Half of it was full...

I use metal queen excluders with an upper entrance hole in the honey super As for catching your hives’s own swarm and then re-combing them? Hmmm ... I’d say yes it can be done, but the colony will need to raise a new queen, so it’ll still be about a month lag from baby queen to new eggs...

I think your plan is a good one...with maybe a few things to consider considering your extreme conditions, one thought/suggestion might be to take your loss on the hot hive this fall, so you can use it’s resources to help your other one survive... if that’s needed Here March is when a lot of...

yep, some of those big suppliers are probably contracting a lot of that in this way... but I was thinking of some of the other ‘local’ ones too...I think there are a lot of apiaries selling replacement queens and packages that are doing this... but certainly not all of them are... my point in...

    The Honey Factory

There are smaller, more local bee outfits in my general area that offer nucs and replacement queens pretty much all summer... from memory I think they start offering them at the end of April, and have them through out the summer I don’t recall how late in the summer they’d have them, but it’d...

Here’s some ramblings of the subject of breed traits... sorry it’s so long  I don’t put a great deal of stock in breed descriptions for bees for a few reasons... but basically it’s often a lot like cattle breed descriptions... If we go read the Belted Galloway description on that breed...

My system is to look 3 times, then I give up and ask my wife to look and she finds it right off... This was foolproof in the past, but here lately she’s becoming less reliable and sometimes must look twice herself... and sometimes now I forget what I’m looking for, so I can’t remember what to...

im a bit behind on BYC bees... but I think you have a ‘queen cup’... My neighbor Joe has five of every part, fitting, hardware.... because his dad had two of everything, and Joe had everything, then Joe went to auctions ... but Joe’s son will end up with eight of everything..... Bees are like...

Here at the house my split is bearding, the original is not... but I’ve been swiping brood from the original the last few weeks trying to fix the third ( the ‘laying worker’ hive) so the original is not firing on all cylinders 🙄

just as a I suspected when I saw that pic... you’re one of those extra crazy beeks 😉 I might talk to my bees, and have just recently had poker night with my pet turkey, a plastic goose decoy and the cat 🤪... but at least I’m not as crazy as you 😉

@BirdsBeesTrees i just noticed your profile pic... you’re not doing something crazy like jumping out of properly functioning airplanes are you? bee people are generally considered crazy enough, without that kinda insanity 😉

No beard stubble on the hive this evening... we had some cooler temps and a nice north breeze today though The bird bath was still a pretty popular bee spot today though

I had to look and see if I could find that possum video... I would not have guessed a possum would go for bees I don’t think this is the video I was remembering, but it shows a possum in action pretty well Hopefully this link works https://photos.app.goo.gl/X341YPwi3tewXnFW2

My understanding is the skunk will reach up and get the bees to fly out onto the ground and then he’ll smash them with his paws (which will leave scratch marks) and then he eats the bees ... or if they attack him he’ll roll on the ground and smash them all and then eat them... I once saw a...

I said they were starting to beard, so that was just bee stubble 😉 but your pic appears to be a bee goatee... this is a bee beard
