They put the announcement of 400 workers laid off from Herbruck's as:

"Future outbreaks of HPAI could also be controlled and even prevented via reforms to global meat production, Kuiken says. A more sweeping approach could include a cap on the global poultry population size and more equitable consumption – Europe currently eats twice as much...

I just got back from the grocery store. Not many eggs for sale there at all. None of the "cheap" eggs, and those had gone up about 50 cents a dozen from the last I knew.
I wonder how many chickens Herbrucks culled?
The TSC stores near me get their chicks from Townline in Zeeland, MI, close enough to come by truck. Townline says they have 55K breeder hens and estimated 5M hatched last year. They sell to the public too, but do not allow pickup. (Thank goodness.)
Ionia county is a HUGE producer of poultry and eggs for the state of Michigan, ranking #1, and it's all (or nearly all) Herbruck's.

I just heard on the news that Cal-Maine is shutting down egg production in one of their facilities, due to AI.
I think getting chicks will be really popular again this year when egg prices spike.
I won't lie. I'm a bit nervous. One of Herbruck's facilities has caught fire -- twice -- so I don't know how serious they are about safety at their facilities. They are one of, if not the, biggest egg producers in Michigan.
This spring/summer will be... interesting... to say the least, I think.
