I'm not sure what I'll get done in the garden today. I think I'll pick some more black raspberries. I did get a box of low-sugar pectin to try making jam again.
Last year, I had a lot of the rotten layer issue. I ended up chopping and freezing them.
Starting from seed has been... mostly a miss. I don't do it consistently enough to say it works for me, or doesn't.
Here's my experience with bulbing onions (what my husband calls "regular onions"):
I always miss a couple when I dig them up. I find them sprouting the next year. If I dig them, they are invariably small, about the size of an onion set, which means they didn't grow much the season before. They...
I think I'll do this. I save seed for the next year. Most of my tomatoes are for canning, and bigger tomatoes make the job go faster.

I would love a reason to eat more eggs. They're right on the counter, quick and easy to cook, go with a lot of stuff from the...
Those look... scary....! I'd be afraid to pick tomatoes. Like the plant would grab onto me and pull me in. Did you ever wonder why they call those stems that we prune off suckers?
Otherwise, they'd get lost in there!
I have had this happen too. It made some MONSTER tomatoes!
I would love to get some cattle panels. How to get them home from TSC... that's the hard part. I've seen people bend them into an arch and put them in truck beds and trailers. Hubby isn't so sure about that.
I'd like to get some square tomato cages. Like about 70 of them. :lau
I do have lots of garden uses for the round flimsy ones. I put them over my New England Asters as they sprouted. Those grow tall, and last year, a lot of the stems fell over. This year, they're contained in the tomato cages...
Re: canning lids. I bought some from here, and have had good luck with them. A few FTS canning tomatoes, but 3-4 out of 200+ is not out of line, to me. A tomato seed can get under the rim, there could be flaw in my (old) jar, or unevenness in the sealing compound.
I will not buy Anchor brand...
There are grapes on my vines for the first time! It's their 3rd season.
Yes, thank you. The reason to use the honey in the jam is so that I can use my berries and my sweetener. I did know that it'll lose the health benefits.
As for the sugar in jam? The rhubarb jam recipe I started with had an...
We. Got. Rain!
:celebrate :clap:wee
Afterward, I went out and picked some more black raspberries. I think I'll have enough to make jam with now. I'm going to make it with honey. It'll be a small batch, and I can see if I like it, or if I want to tweak the recipe.
I did another batch this summer.
Hubby doesn't like the texture/flavor of the WG eggs. Also, the yolk nearly always breaks, so I use them for scrambled eggs and baking.
I try to do a "bug hunt" every day. At least I go through the potato patch and squish the potato bug larvae. Yes, I wear gloves, because... ewwww....!
The asparagus beetles are winding down. The Japanese beetles are everywhere. The Beatles were a famous foursome.
Heavy rain about 20 miles away. Nary a drop here. A couple more "good" chances in the next 7 days. We'll see if any pan out.
As a hedge, I watered the heavy soil garden today. Man, is that clay getting dry and hard where I didn't water. I put the water right at the base of the plants so that...
