I'm still amazed at how much character gets packed into these seemingly fragile creatures. As I've often said,I think Red Sex links are lovely looking birds and some of your pictures of Blanche show exactly why.

Unless you can get thousands of volts going through the fence it won't keep a determined wild boar out. We had electric fences and apart from having to constantly stop them shorting out due to vegetation growth, or a sheep or donkey scratching on a post and pushing it over, when the the sheep or...

I used to buy bread made with spelt in Catalonia. It makes the best Marmite on toast one can imagine.:D

You could try drying the fermented grains. It's what I ended up doing. Easy for me on top of a radiator, probably in the oven during the summer months. All the watery droppings have stopped no matter what they've eaten while foraging.

Do you get those flying ant bore hole eruptions. Almost impossible to get the chickens to bed when the flying ants hatched and flew in Catalonia.

He will adjust to the broken spur. They don't have to match. Rooster develope a roll to their walk to allow for spur growth.

A weak gizzard can be strengthened through excercise; it's a muscle group. I would try fermenting any grains you feed her and see if it makes any difference. Chickens need roughage in their diet. It's quite surprising what gets found in a free range chickens crop...

I have to hold my hand up to being a tiny bit biased, mainly due to detesting the creatures and of course being allergic to them which greatly inhibits in depth study.:p

Much as I dislike cats they are no match for the savagery of chickens. I've yet to see a cat rip off parts of a dead or dying cat they lived with. Most cats are tame; most chickens are not. I've seen countless posts wanting to know how to make a chicken friendly and cuddly. Never seen a post...

Neither. You have a much kinder view of people then me. I don't think one can judge by the active members on BYC many who originally got chickens for their eggs and after found that there was rather more to the chicken than an egg laying machine. It's interesting to note that the majority of...

Possibly. Most people on BYC don't keep chickens because they like the creature. What they care about is eggs. If chickens didn't lay eggs this site wouldn't even exist. The entire backyard chicken movement has very little to do with the love of chickens. it's about how to keep chickens in...

You've certainly nailed your colours to the mast with that statement. That's as near to they're just chickens that I've read on any thread I post on for a while.

I dread to think where you get these beliefs from. :D Let me ask you something. Have you ever seen roosters fighting because they want more hens? I can promise you no rooster I've know has fought, let alone fought to the death over a hen. Roosters don't fight over females. I know, it's hard to...
