    Muscovy ducks shivering in cold

Update on my duckies and the heater. It got in the single digits this week and when I checked on the ducks they looked miserably cold and were not sitting under the heater. I originally installed the heater about 18" high on the wall (angled downward) as suggested but I don't think it was...

    Muscovy ducks shivering in cold

A couple of my ducks have learned to eat whole dried corn! And all of them will eat sunflower seeds now. They just needed some time and training. But the weather here continues to be mild so they aren't needing the extra treats and heat as much. I had a great time hanging out with them today...

    Muscovy ducks shivering in cold

Thank you! I might try the warm oatmeal on the colder days. I did end up buying a heater for their coop but they continue to shiver outside even though it's not that cold. Maybe I'm worrying too much....my mom seems to think I am. They look and feel healthy otherwise.

    Muscovy ducks shivering in cold

The weather has been cooperative this week and I've been able to make mid-winter modifications to my duck coop without freezing my fingers off. Heater is installed and ready for the cold-er weather next week!

    Muscovy ducks shivering in cold

I got a response in 3 minutes! 😲 Here's the owner, Holly's, reply: "Yes, you can definitely plug it into a thermostat. I would think 18-20 inches above them would be sufficient. If they act cold, just lower it a bit or vice versa."

That's a good idea. They do have great customer service and they're super quick to respond.

I was wondering if mounting it higher would be better as they wouldn't get as warm. They seem to do fine when it's in the 30s.

    Muscovy ducks shivering in cold

That is true. I didn't want to get a heater in the first place because I wanted them to get used to the cold, but I couldn't watch them sitting around doing nothing but shivering. We have a generator. We have reptiles that need heat too.

Okay, I wasn't sure if there were more instructions that come with it. My ducks are apparently wimpy :p so I'll be turning it on when it gets below freezing.

Duckies are back in their coop (It's in the 30s-40s°F) and the heater comes tomorrow! @Miss Lydia How high should I hang it? I got the side mount model and I'll be mounting on angled blocks to point it downward.

Thanks. I did that and even let the corn soften a bit in the water and they still spit them out. :idunno

    Muscovy ducks shivering in cold

Is that similar to what's in chicken scratch? I'm afraid if the grains are hard at all they won't like. They don't even eat sunflower seeds. :idunno

First bath in a long time! It's cold but the sun's out so I hope they'll be okay. They sure are happy to be outside again. Three crammed into one pan.

    Muscovy ducks shivering in cold

Thanks, that's a good long time! I think you've convinced me! I realized it can be used for other animals too, not just the ducks. I think I'll get the 11x30 since there is a discount right now.

    Muscovy ducks shivering in cold

Would a smaller one (11x11 or 11x16) be big enough for 4 ducks or would I have to go larger (11x30)? Also, how long has yours lasted?

I did look into those and I would LOVE to have one. But is it worth the price? I don't know! It only has a 3 year warranty...
