Coop for special needs chicken - ADVICE PLEASE

Wanted to provide my last update. Yes, this poor girl was put down this weekend. We got 4 - 6" of rain in the past few days. Despite my best efforts to place the coop in a sheltered location, the ground inside the coop was thoroughly soaked. Since my special needs girl couldn't stand, she also...

That's a good idea... Maybe some rugs or something I can wash?

Coop for special needs chicken - ADVICE PLEASE

Just sharing an update... This little girl is still getting along. I took her out this afternoon to wash her underside and clip her feathers because they had poo stuck in them. Now she is enjoying some time in the shade in a nice grassy spot. I'm a little worried how she and her two coop mates...

Coop for special needs chicken - ADVICE PLEASE

Yep, mine aren't scared as much as curious and they are TERRIBLE about being underfoot... This is a consequence of them equating me with food and treats. They follow me like the Pied Piper

Coop for special needs chicken - ADVICE PLEASE

Yes, it will be right next to the main coop. There's an area that's always shaded and somewhat protected from the elements so I thought it would be the perfect place. The chickens all hang out there regularly so the hens will have plenty of company.

Coop for special needs chicken - ADVICE PLEASE

All done and sealed now (as best as I could...). Just have to let it fully dry. (Ignore DH's messy shop floor...) 😂 Now the next question... Should I move it into place and introduce the hens this evening when it's dark? Or tomorrow after church when there's still plenty of daylight? What...

Coop for special needs chicken - ADVICE PLEASE

I decided to go ahead and use Thompsons water seal & stain on it. First of all, it is a right PITA to paint this thing AFTER it's already assembled. Second... I think Thompsons should be SUED for how IMPOSSIBLE and frustrating it is to open their damn cans.... :rant

Coop for special needs chicken - ADVICE PLEASE

Thank you! I still have to put the handles on each of the 3 lids but I was starving so I will do that part tomorrow. I have carabiners to hook through the latches so no critters can open it. It's pretty solid and definitely very heavy. My DH and DS will have to move it out to the chicken yard...

Coop for special needs chicken - ADVICE PLEASE

Just finished up the coop for the special needs pullet... Probably should paint the plywood or do something to keep the top from rotting? Dimensions are 8 ft x 2 ft x 2ft

Coop for special needs chicken - ADVICE PLEASE

Several years ago we used to live in a nice subdivision. On nights before a horse show, we would bring my daughter's horse to stay in our fenced backyard overnight since we would need to leave at 5-6 AM. Kids in the neighborhood would nearly wreck on their bicycles rubbernecking at the oddity...

Coop for special needs chicken - ADVICE PLEASE

Great! I think this is very doable... The only tweaks I would make would to use plywood on the lid. I can already forsee the goats climbing on top of it...

Coop for special needs chicken - ADVICE PLEASE

Thanks for the replies! Yes, the picture helps a lot and makes perfect sense! Would that be large enough for both the special needs pullet and the Silkie? I would think she would need a cuddle buddy, especially in winter?

Coop for special needs chicken - ADVICE PLEASE

I read over my previous post and realized I wasn't very clear. I was going to use the kennel to give the deformed pullet and her Silkie companion a defined space that's in the main chicken yard but would keep them safe/separated from the bigger chickens. However, I would still be building a coop...

Coop for special needs chicken - ADVICE PLEASE

I'm having trouble visualizing what you are trying to describe. Are you able to draw it on a piece of paper and take a picture? I was going to purchase this little fenced kennel and put it inside my chicken yard between the goat house and the main coop. This will allow a "see but don't touch"...

Coop for special needs chicken - ADVICE PLEASE

I have tried a few things to no avail. I tried to make a hobble from pipe cleaners which I have used successfully for splay leg. That may have worked in the early days if I had realized what was happening sooner. Needless to say it only made her completely unable to move without falling on her...

Coop for special needs chicken - ADVICE PLEASE

Here's a picture of how she normally sits with the leg stretched out behind her. After I moved her from a puppy pad to shavings, she was much more comfortable and had less poop on her belly.

Coop for special needs chicken - ADVICE PLEASE

Yes, she was born with a deformed foot but I think I UNINTENTIONALLY made it worse. This video was her with her mama when I first noticed it. At the time I thought she had a broken leg. It was only after I snagged her away from mama that I realized it was deformed. But more importantly you...

Coop for special needs chicken - ADVICE PLEASE

I have a special needs chicken who essentially has only one good leg. She clumsily hops on one leg to move around but generally lays on the ground most of the time. Her other leg is deformed and stretches straight backwards. At times she somewhat uses it for balance but not well. I currently...
