    Silkie cross for color

Not yet! We just moved so I’m still working on getting my pens separated and fertilized by the right boys! It’ll be probably a year at least before I get lavender chicks and even longer before I get the silkie feathering.

    Silkie cross for color

Oh yes, that’s right, thank you. I’m still learning a lot about color genes. Completely forgot splash is two copies of blue lol. So most likely blue babies with gold leakage then

    Silkie cross for color

I could be wrong but I think they would most likely be black based birds with leakage or partridge like markings. I don’t think you’d get any blue or splash like combos since 1 copy of the blue gene has to be present in both parents for it to be expressed in the phenotype

Yes! I love the threads that are just pics of cute birds. And yes I agree, I’m not currently breeding to the sop as I haven’t been doing this long, just strengthening my stock right now and trying to learn more. My favorite birds are nowhere near show quality and the one I do have that’s show...

    Silkie cross for color

Yes, I just have a chocolate hen right now, but I’m waiting for a breeder nearby to have a chocolate rooster come available so I can hopefully produce some sex linked muave pullets too. I also love the crazy eyebrows, my calico Cochin roo has them, he’s not quite to the sop but he’s just so...

    Silkie cross for color

I also have a small garden I need to start prepping for early spring. I even have rabbits for meat and manure for the garden. I love those Orpingtons! The last rooster has awesome eyebrows lol. They’re the only other breed I work with beside the silkies and Cochins. I currently have lavender...

    Silkie cross for color

I currently have 2 separate coops and am putting money aside for 2 more. Alll my bantams in one and my egg layers in another. I’d love to be able to have separate pens for each color project eventually. The chocolate projects are ones I’m very excited about, this hen was the first chocolate I’ve...

    Silkie cross for color

No i appreciate the information. I’ve been breeding for a little bit now and was interested in a side project for fun, especially since I’d really love some lavender silkies. I’m not to worried about Lots of generations of babies as I have lots of people in my area that buy the barnyard bantams...

    Silkie cross for color

Perhaps where you are located. The only ones I’ve found in my area were almost $100 for pullets. I Can’t afford to pay that nor can I afford the shipping for most hatching eggs, which might not even hatch. Besides, the whole point was to try and produce my own. It’s much more satisfying than...
  10. Timbers Happy Hens

    Silkie cross for color

Wow I’ve never heard of ideal hatchery before. They had a few other breeds I’ve been on the hunt for and their shipping isn’t ridiculously expensive. Thank you for the recommendation! Will be ordering in a month or so

    Silkie cross for color

Thank you, they have them listed for $5 a piece for live chicks. Extremely reasonable honestly. I’ve never ordered live chicks before, should I wait until spring when the weather is better?

    Silkie cross for color

Pacific Northwest, the closest large city to me is Eugene, OR
  13. Timbers Happy Hens

    Silkie cross for color

The reason I was considering the Orpingtons is bc they’re much more readily available in the lavender color. Whereas if I were to use Cochins, I’d have to order hatching eggs that would cost me an arm and a leg and then they might not even hatch. I do agree that bantam Cochins are probably the...

    Silkie cross for color

What breed is good to cross to silkies to introduce specific colors? I’m considering crossing my lavender Orpington girls to my black silkie or paint silkie roo to work towards producing a line of lavender silkies. I know it would take time and work but that’s the fun part! I also thought about...
