Today I cleaned out the back area behind the coop which is going to be their pasture area. Hubby will cut a pop door in the back. I took 10 wheelbarrow full of rubber mulch that we had in the area we laid out the coop and I had to remove it quickly to build the coop and run, I just threw it in...
I did run an extension cord to that area anticipating the winter. I have a radiant brooder and that can go on the wall and if we have super cold snaps but we’ve been having less and less of those here. Also, for a water warmer to keep it from freezing.
I watched all the girls on the roost last...
I feel dumb because I finally figured out that I can fill it daily during the warmer months very easily and I don’t need to lug it back and forth super full 😂😩🙈
Tuesday will be a week they’ve been outside and everything is going well. They’re a lot of fun.
just a few notes:
They’re using the roost, looks like the front one of the 3 I put in. I’m assuming as they get bigger they may need to spread to the back two as well. I’m pretty sure they’re all...
Ha! He was so sick of this project by this weekend but last night he was outside cheeping and cooing at them while pretending he doesn’t love them. Haha. I gave him a few weekends off before we do the exterior. He earned it. Lol
So, I’m not @rosemarythyme but I know that by going out 18-24 inches, if a predator tries to dig, they’re likely to start right at the coop and then work outward. The more cloth there is, the less likely they are to find the “edge”.
For us, digging down wasn’t even really an option here. So...
My husband went to the window to see what they were doing last night and she followed him (she seems to like him). She eventually came down with the other girls but I just don’t want her getting hurt.
Everyone was outside again in the run because I had to add some things. I decided to make my own nesting boxes! Super easy to spray and wipe out. They’re screwed in with 8 screws and very stable.
I have a specific question. Do I really need a pop door? They’re using the man door and that’s...
Well, the girls are moved in. It was absolutely beautiful today and we let them in the run and then locked them up at dusk… we will leave them inside the coop for the next few days to make sure they get its where they live. Also, it’s going to rain for a few days.
A few notes. Our silkie can...
I cant believe it but the coop is liveable with just the exterior, nesting boxes, and a pop door to do. Thankfully they can use the human door with a ramp until we cut in the pop door.
We both really worked hard on this and I’m so appreciative to my husband for all his hard work on this...
We have a lot to accomplish this weekend and it looks like rain on 1 of my husbands days off (Sunday). My girls are huge and need more space.
We have to add hardware cloth to the eaves (3 total)
Run and coop need doors. Coop door is the priority because we want to get them out there ASAP...
Metal roof is on, two front panels of hardware cloth are on the run, fenced in my garden area temporarily, window got hardware cloth (needs trim cover), window got lock and hardware outside (temporarily until we side the exterior), and my pride and joy, my roosts… I measured and cut them...
The window in the coop will get hardware cloth on the inside with poultry staples and then finished with composite trim over. The window will open from the exterior. I got 2 locks and carabiners for them. 😁
Today I painted the interior surfaces of the run with porch and floor paint and also did the floor in the coop with the same paint. The interior is painted and my wallpaper is hung. I will put a coat of flex seal over the wallpaper tomorrow for easy cleaning.
This weekend my husband is going...
