Well, we are rebuilding over here at Cluckingham palace. With Dottie’s return we ended up taking in two older hens from someone who was wanting to rehome them so Dottie would not be alone. We have built a fence, and are adding solar power hot fencing around our chicken yard to deter any future...
Dottie came home it was a miracle she didn’t have so much as a feather missing. She came clucking out of the bushes and hopped into the coop. Now we are looking for anyone selling a hen or two so she isn’t alone and doesn’t get stressed. I’m so thankful we are praying that Houlihan will show up...
The unimaginable happened today. Two dogs first broke into our yard, then into our run this morning and completely devastated our entire flock. Baby Blue was still alive but died after a few minutes in my lap. We are absolutely heartbroken. Our youngest weren’t even a year old yet and we had...
Since we moved we’ve had the chickens enclosed in a covered run. It’s decently sized but our new backyard needs some serious TLC, so before we settle the flock into a more permanent yard with more square footage they are temporarily in their run. They don’t seem to mind.
Today the power went...
I teach 4th grade and we start each year learning the scientific method. The observation step is always fun to practice, this year I am planning a short day activity where they will guess which animal tracks they are looking at. Our small zoo at home works perfectly for diy. Of course that...
So much has been going on in our household! I am excited to share that both Pepper and Baby Blue laid their first eggs on the same day (they really are inseparable). We have a carton full of adorable fairy eggs now!
Yesterday my sister came over and we were out there admiring how big and...
Another update! We’ve moved cities which was a whole ordeal, but everyone has settled in nicely! Our buff Orpington pullet, Houlihan, has started laying and her eggs are SO tiny and adorable, I love them! Her first one was itty bitty and ended being a double yolker! They were about the size of a...
It has been a while since I updated. I’m excited. My roo Hawkeye is crowing this week!! It’s adorable. He’s also clumsily learning the art of gentlemanly procreation with the help of my mature hens. They give him sass when he approaches them less gracefully and refuse to participate. He’s been...
Mosey does not love affection, but she loves company. Whenever I’m out she never strays more than 2 or 3 feet from me, quietly telling me about her day. She might be my favorite, even if she is aloof.
Tilly and Penny joining us under the pear tree this afternoon!!
Update as of yesterday! They have discovered the roost and are up there all the time now. About 8 weeks. They are facing our sliding glass door, which is why it’s so dirty. They are such a fun little batch, a lot different than our first group.
Left to right, we have Pepper, Hawkeye, Houlihan...
I am just making this as a way to document my own flock, stories, and pictures for reference later and to see how far we’ve come (and for memories)! We are raising our second batch of chicks and having a lot of fun. I love seeing everyone’s posts and their flocks and hearing about all the silly...
