I don't know where to post this, but we're getting new chicks in early April from Meyer and my 1st grader is eager to read all she can about chickens. I've seen the Gail Demerow book, but it's really for older kids and I'm wondering if anyone can recommend some good picture books. A "how-to" book would be nice, but even just some stories featuring realistic chickens and/or kids caring for them would be perfect.
While I'm at it, I'll put in a HUGE plug for The Rooster and the Fox by Helen Ward. It's a picture book retelling of Chaucer's Chanticleer story. She used only heritage breeds of livestock in her illustrations, including dozens of chicken breeds, and has a key in the back discussing the various breeds. I stumbled across it at my local library and it's my kids' current favorite.
Anyone else have ideas? Thanks!
