What's up with that?? One of my does that lost her baby that I've been milking has salty tasting milk...

I didn't plan on using it to drink but to make soap BUT my DD wanted to drink some so I filtered it and she said it was salty....

Never having tasted goat's milk this made me wonder 1. What it's suppose to taste like 2. Is something wrong with her milk for drinking.... 3. Is it still okay to use for soap

Mastitis starts out tasting salty...when you milk after your thru do you use any type of teat dip in her teats? Is her udder hard and hot? this they say is the starting of mastitis and the salty taste is a sign. My cow did this and we treated her for it.
 
Thats what I heard, too...

Also how long ago did she freshen? For about 2 weeks...the milk will be 'off' while theres still some colostrum in it.

Goats milk shouldn't taste any different from cow's milk under good conditions. Maybe a tish sweeter...but still no different.
 
I would say her udder is firm and warm not hard and hot....

If it is mastitis, can you still use it for soap??

I'll get some treatment and do it as a precaution in case it is....

Is the best med the type you squeeze into the tit?? I saw some that you put on their nose....

I guess the real question is what would you suggest to use for treatment and if it isn't mastitis will it hurt to treat it??

We don't have a large animal vet and mine charges quite a bit to see the animals.... anything I can do on my own, I do....

Also the more you milk her it will help clear it up as it removes the problems...Always strip before milking this helps you see if there is any problems. I dont think it will hurt to make soap. Sounds like it might be because she hasnt really come into milk yet...If you milk 3 times a day for about a week it should help.

Sorry late to the game here- i milked one goat this morning and it tasted slightly salty. I then milked another goat this evening and it tasted like cows milk! I put them both in the fridge once strained to keep cool as i need to seperate the cream.

I tasted the first one again to check the difference, slight cream rising as you can see it on the glass and it tasted lovely no salt at all any more! Just wondering after reading the mastitis comments if the milk is still safe.

Im using it for icecream this weekend.
