Okay folks...please tell me I planted it right side up! I've never been so confused on a plant. Here's a picture of the Holly (on the right) alongside another woody-stemmed plant, which is a Hollyhock - it's pretty obvious which way the Hollyhock goes in the ground, but I was so stumped on the Holly:

Holly by itself:

The Holly had little growths at one end, but THAT was the end that I initially thought went DOWN. Upon closer examination, the little growths appeared to be LEAVES! So, I ended up planting the end with the grows UP, but I can easily dig them up & flip them around if need be.

The Holly had very few little stringy roots coming off the main stem, but it APPEARED to me that they little stringy roots were growing away from the ends with the growths (thus, growing down from the way I planted them with the growth ends up):

The instructions were useless for me...they just indicated to plant them about 1" below the soil surface, "crown end up" - okay, which end is the crown???

Boy that's confusing! I agree w/ everyone else - you planted it correctly. If you don't see any new growth in a month you might want to dig it back up and turn it around though. LOL

Good luck with your sea holly Wynette. I have one, but it never managed to get big and lovely. It was always just one stem and one flower. Dang it.

Maybe I planted it upside down!

Hey, Luna! Did you DH ever have that cyst sac removed????

Yeah, you could have easily planted it upside down, I think! Gosh, I've planted hundreds of plants, and have never had so many misgivings about which way was up! Sheesh. If it lives and I get more than 1 stem/flower, I'll let you know!

Looks like you did it right. I think you could have planted it longways, too. Kind of like an iris rhizome. Good luck with it. I tried to rip all mine out, because it got out of control. I think you are in a cooler zone than I am (zone 7), so you should be fine! They are pretty plants.

Thanks, sred - yep, I'm in zone 5; I may end up having to cover them with a bucket this fall, not sure. I planted them in the front of the house, so they'll be protected from the harsh winter wind, but still...may cover them just this first winter. I'm not big on plants that need lots of extra attention, but throwing a bucket over the top is easy!

He doesn't have to! Doc said because it ruptured (internally & externally) there's nothing to remove! It healed up nicely too.

He has one more month of antibiotics then it's REALLY over! Thank you for asking Wynette!
