Cochin Thread!!!

I'm just a novice but I think Birchen is the opposite of Columbian; instead of white or buff with black hackles, they have white hackles on a dark body. Help, folks with more experience.....

Actually, birchen and brown/red are each others counter parts. Theoretically, they can be bred to each other also, but it takes a better breeder than I am to do that. I'm afraid of the leakage on the birchens. The reason some people would choose to do that would be to improve type, but I feel that if you look around enough, there are good birchens to be found and you don't need to use brown/red. I've got beautiful hens and a gorgeous roo so there will be no out-crossing for me. I'll leave that to the experts.

Sounds like something I shouldn't go to!! When is it? Do you know the dates?

Au contraire, if you want to see or have the chance to buy the best birds, it is THE PLACE to go. You never know what you will find there and the opportunities are limitless!

I don't have any LF, but I'm thinking the first 2 are pullets. Just not sure about #3 and #4. I would keep an eye on the hocks on #2, and maybe #3 - might be vulture hocks.

Describe your Cochins to someone who's never seen one - but you can't use SOP terms, poultry terms, pics or drawings:

1) Body - So Round that when it jumps down off its roost, it bounces right back up.

2) Feathers - Soft, light and fluffy - like your favorite down pillow.

3) Tail/Cushion - Just like a waterfall; think Niagra Falls - wide, deep and flowing.

4) Feet - Very heavy with feathers - will rival your best dust mop.
