Actually, birchen and brown/red are each others counter parts. Theoretically, they can be bred to each other also, but it takes a better breeder than I am to do that. I'm afraid of the leakage on the birchens. The reason some people would choose to do that would be to improve type, but I feel that if you look around enough, there are good birchens to be found and you don't need to use brown/red. I've got beautiful hens and a gorgeous roo so there will be no out-crossing for me. I'll leave that to the experts.
