We do pysanky at our house - it's one of the reasons I got chickens!

Sadly, we have only brown layers - but pysanky with brown eggs is wonderful!! You are just limited in color options if you use brown. I have to try and find someone who owns white egg layers so I can arrange a little swap.

We normally do pysanky during Lent.

Mine are a little less elaborate - the one on the right is a brown egg.

For those who do pysanky, what type of paint do you use? and how do you get the varnish on there - by painting or spraying it on?

I'm just starting to experiment with painting and etching eggs...we'll see how things go...

I did this one school year as a kid. Don't know if this is how you "really" do it, but we dipped blown eggs into melted wax. In and out. When set we carved off wax and dipped in die. Carved off some more, dipped again and so on. At the end the teacher held the egg over a candle and took off the last of the wax.

They came out kind of pretty for kids. NOTHING like yours cpoz!

I bought everything I needed, including the dye online at http://www.ukrainiangiftshop.com/. I bought an oil based varnish and used a paint brush to apply it. I've heard of people pooring a bit of the varnish into their gloved hand and rolling the egg around in their hand.
