I just started feeding my BC Frizzle layer feed and oyster shell yesterday, which brought up the question of whether I should also start feeding oyster shell to my 5-week-old Coturnix, or do quail need oyster shell?

I dont think they need oyster shell. I used it for about two weeks and I dont think that it helped. I mixed it straight into their feed. They lay eggs hard enough right now for me.

Good luck!

Thanks. I just wasn't sure. Since I know laying hens (chickens) need it, I thought the quail might need it too.

They do need some sort of calcium intake, they have to get it from somewhere. If you don't supplement them with calcium (oyster shell), then they take the reserves from their bodies, which would greatly shorten their life spans. I feed mine oyster shell, and my buttons get cuttle bones. It helps to make them lay more regularly.

I use it for my quail as one of their calcium sources. The production on eggs depletes their calcium. I also feed them hard boil eggs shell and all for calcium and I give them greens a great source of calcium.
