California - Northern

I just moved a broody hen with her fake eggs. Didn't break her broodiness. She just got her chicks to raise and she's doing great. It usually takes a few time to break the broody by moving them off the nest in my experience.
Oh yes! I have moved them into the garage to break them and it did work but it took several days.

One lesson I learned from starting to raise chickens.
Next time I will buy baby chicks beginning September. No need for lamp in the brooder. They will be fully feathered by the time it starts getting cold outside and by end of January/February they will be laying. I think it's a better plan for California.

What do fellow Californian think?

The Tractor store has them in woodland!

You can get them in spring and not have to keep them warm for long.

I was saying that because it will be warm for a while. No need for lamp in September/October. They'll be fully feathered and go to the coop when the weather starts cooling off. Also, by end of January, They'll start laying.

Anyone interested in a Marraduna Basque cockerel? Marraduna is the gorgeous lemon cuckoo color of this breed. I have two cockerels to give away - my biggest one let out his first crow yesterday and started trying to mount the pullets, so it’s time to go. 8 weeks old, vaccinated for Mareks. Basque hens are a great, friendly and super hardy breed. We are in Sonoma.
Hi Stephanie, I see this is from 8 years ago. Do you have any basque pullets for 2025?

Hi there! No, sorry, I don’t breed at all. I also gave away my two extra basque roos and then lost the one I had kept a few months later.
I got mine from Greenfire, I am sure they will have them available again. I think I also saw Meyer offering them now! Good luck!

The most accurate California map of all the regions. I'm in North Central California---Sacramento. I have a new post in the Free Rehoming section of this page regarding TWO white silkie roos. I hope someone here can help. Thank you.
