Show me your quail pens!!!

Assorted stackable box cages I’ve made and my bigger grow out.. they are cheap to make and easy to move around if the need arises.

I just took some pictures of the door.. I may have to wait until later to avoid the bright mornin sun.. but I’ll try to post.
Thank you very much. Top hinged. The latches are the C-wires on each side? I see the spring but not sure how that works.

I like big doors but mine are large cages. Having a mouse issue and lining everything with hardware cloth seems the best solution. My doors are old refrigerator wire shelves that let the mice slip through. Live and learn.

Spring keeps tension across the entire height of the door, I put one on both ends because it’s a longer door than it is tall.. and because it’s 1/2x1/2 hardware cloth. And rabbit cage J clips are handy to have and to get used to using for all things wire related.

I have had chickens for quite a while, and a friend got me into quail, so I got busy and built a cage, I looked at many pic and picked out what I liked with each one, then built this.

I built poop pans from duct metal, there are four pans.

The feeders are removable and there is a block off plate for the hole to keep everyone in.

The cage is going in the shed on the wall.

I have to finish the wall before I can hang the cage, I got to get busy!

I am going to build the water system tomorrow!
Hopefully I'll be putting quail in it by Saturday.
What do you all think.
Wow! I’m impressed, Jim. I spent months trying to come up with a feeder solution using anything from dryer vent tubing to rain gutter tubes etc. Then I ran across your pics here and jumped out of my seat in excitement! You totally nailed it! How is it working so far and are they able to make a mess of the food thrown outside the feeder? Anything you’d do differently in hindsight?

My 14 unit Quail High Rise Condo set up is very near completion. Both levels have oil drip pans from O’Reilly Auto Parts slid in between to contain the messes.

This was made by repurposing a Metaltech Baker Rack scaffolding set that had the working surface ruined. Same as the yellow ones sold at Home Depot. Lumber used was +80% leftover scrap pieces from a deck build. Used a table saw to cut down the 4x6 posts and 2x lumber all down to close to the same size. Some 2x4’s added also.

In hindsight, I waaaaaaay overdid this and way overthought it. However, I did it as a fun carpentry type project and set out to try new things and learn to think about building things differently. From that perspective, I’m happy with the result and accomplished what was wanted for my quail that I’ve totally fallen in love with.

I’ll post more pics when it’s finished.

This thread is over 10 years old and still going. Wow!
Here is my quail hutch. It currently has three quail in it and I'm hatching more soon.
They are Japanese/Coturnix JumbosView attachment 3554565
Edit: it has a cloth I put over the front at night on top and a dust bath in the top right corner
I updated this cage and added lots to it, but I've now got a whole new cage 4x the size. I'm very proud of it.
Planning on getting some playground sand for the top level (same level as the wood shavings). I still cover half of it at night.
They have loads of handmade foraging toys, their favourites being the diy foam foraging mat and their little hanging crinkle paper and cardboard ball.

It still holds my three female jumbo quail, but will hold my other two jumbo quail soon once they are mature.

It didn't stay this clean for long lol.

This a amazing. How r u keeping predators from digging under
:welcome

If you float your mouse over a person, you can see when they last logged on. The person you replied to hasn't logged on in over 9 years, so you're not likely to get a response.

That is a beautiful setup, though. Most people will do a hardware cloth skirt that sticks out about 18" and bury it to keep diggers out.
