@Fat Daddy FYI that cross is gorgeous and the chicken was a 'Black Red Malay' rooster.

HA HA! I see, its a "eye of the beholder" deal!! Forgive my previous ignorance.... I will say its the prettiest chicken - guinea hybred Iv ever seen a picture of!@Fat Daddy FYI that cross is gorgeous and the chicken was a 'Black Red Malay' rooster.
...wait WHAT???if you are a dab hand at AI you can do it more reliably than trying to get the two species together, I have had a researcher buy a lot of my coturnix eggs to investigate if there is a gene that makes it more likely to have a successful outcome. Given that using AI you can hybridize a chicken with a coturnix, I imagine all quail species can probably be hybridized by someone willing to take the trouble
While I imagine a silkiequail to be an adorable bird, it’s definitely not easy to produce. In the study testing of the “silver” gene in quail is homologous to the “blue/splash” gene in chickens, 582 eggs were produced from artificially inseminating quail. Only two hatched, one of which survived over a year....wait WHAT???
I know this is an old thread, and I'm sorry, but WHAT?? I need pictures of this and how it turns out. Are the offspring fertile? Now I REALLY want to hybridize my Silkies with my coturnix quail.
