Sexing Geese

Quote:
Got the geese from McMurray Hatchery. They just describe them as 'weeder geese' but don't name any breeds specifically. I went on a hunt online yesterday and thought I knew what they were ... pretty sure the mostly gray ones are "Graylag" and the others look like, at least from the pix I saw, Saddleback Pomeranians or ... oh what was that other ones name ... began with a T and I saw it then lost the website. UPDATE: Ok found it, they're called Twente Landrace.

Sounds like getting to a goose egg may be a challenge! Maybe I should order my suit of armor now before next Spring!!!

Your geese look just like mine. I have the same variations of colors too, except that I had the 6 this time last year and they got away from me with the breeding last spring and this year I am starting out with 26. Most of which I have no idea the sex of. My original 6 I found out last spring were four female and two males. I gotta gain control of the situation this year

What happened to them? Did they just fly or run away or what? Or do you mean the reproduced like crazy?

You went from 6 to 26??? Wow, you're a brave one!!!

Yeah, I meant they got away from me with the breeding...I put some in the incubator and hatched some because I was to impatient to wait on them and was afraid they might not go broody... Then they did, after they hatched in the bator . I think three of the four went broody. The first one, I took some of her egss away and the last two I only let hatch a couple. It was my first year with them and I thought it was to mean to not let them at least have a few babies...lol. This year, I am going to have to be mean. It is costing a fortune to winter all these geese and ducks. They can really put away the food

Yeah they are pigs aren't they? We have six geese and, um, 12 ducks!! They hang out with the 3 Boer goats and a rooster.

We have a smaller inner 'winter pen' area with a fence and gate and then in the spring/summer/fall we open the gate into a very large fenced area into our woods. I would love to EAT the duck and geese eggs and give them away, but I would imagine I'd have to walk through those woods daily to find the nests eh? Then I'd have to get past the geese to get to the eggs! I don't really want any more geese OR ducks, to be honest, so I have a feeling I'll be becoming an 'expert' egg hunter in a few months!

Actually the geese are already being frisky despite it being below freezing all the time and six inches of snow on the ground! Silly me, I thought they only were frisky and laid eggs in the spring!!! But there is a nice nest inside the 'goat shed' filled with eggs but can't tell if they're duck eggs or geese or both. But I don't want to eat them since I don't know how long they've been there so I'm just letting 'nature take it's course' with those in that nest! Seems to me they'd get and stay FROZEN!
