Materials:
-1 cubical 9 cube storage unit by Essential Home available at Kmart
-1 cubical 3 cube storage unit by Essential Home available at Kmart
-4 foam boards available at Kmart
-approximately 3' x 3 1/2' hardware cloth
-approximately 1' x 5' coroplast
-10 small parakeet water fountains (purchased at walmart, link is for a different site)
aspen bedding available at Wal-mart
2 rolls of contact paper
Foam rubber padding
12 Hefty plastic picnic cups

Cage:
Assemble shelving as instructed on box.
Cut foam rubber padding 10 1/2" x 10 1/2" and attach to inside top of cage
Cut hardware cloth 35" x 9 1/2" (4 pieces)
Cut an opening approximately 3" x 3" for a door
attach hardware cloth to the fronts of each level with staples, leaving 4-5" open on the top above the doorway to allow the coroplast to slide up and down (door)
Cut coroplast 4" x 13" to cover door

Pans:
Cut foam board 12 1/2" x 12 1/2"
fold sides in and attach with tape
Cover bottoms of pan with contact paper; fill with aspen shavings

Cups:
The cups are for feed cups, simply cut about 1" to 1 1/2" off the bottom of the cup for a 'feeder'

Nice idea! Good work! That was easier than dividing bookcases would have been, too.

Yeah, plus bookcases cost about the same, plus I'd have to add even more material to make them work. I'm thinking of getting another 3-cubby shelf and not adding the dividers to use for my button bachelors. That way I can get the rat manor cage out of there and get rid of it, it takes up a lot of space!
 
I just picke up a book case at a second hand store for this same purpose. I hate asking my boyfriend for help, I wanted to build a cage system like yours on my own. You have now solved my dilema about how to make the doors, as I am not tool savy. I think your system will work perfectly for what I have in ind. Thanks for posting it.
