I am wanting to put in slide in plexiglass windows in my coop. I already built the coop, and the windows weren't thought of until reading some posts here. But I want to be able to slide the plexiglass out in the late spring thru early fall, and have hardware wire there. I am thinking this would allow for extra ventalation in the warmer months. Then the rest of the year slide the windows back in to keep the heat in the coop. The hardware wire would be over the opening in the coop all the time. Any ideas on how to build something to allow me to do this.. Anybody have a design like this?? Please post pics..

I've read that others on here use basic "clam shell" baseboard molding and nail it on backwards (so the flat side is on the outside), so there is a space to slide the plexiglass in & out. Sounds like it would work well.

I still have to put the orange board in front to make a stop in that direction and I will have a nail or other small board behind it for a stop when open.
Anything else you want to know about it?

I'm lazy and would go an easier route like four screws to hold it up there and forget about all the work and expense to slide them in and out.

My plan is to have 2 different windows (one hardware wire & the other plexiglass) and an extra frame on the inside... screws and wing nuts to swap them out easily as the season changes... with, possibly, hinged shutters on the side exposed to the weather.

Thanks everybody you have given me a lot to think about! One last question on the same notion: Do you think that the windows as described would leave too much cold into the coop, as it wouldn't be sealed per say as good as a window... Granted it wouldn't be as easy or as cheap as the plexiglass window..

With our winters I still have these windows. The wind howls and it gets down to 5 degrees. My birds do fine. My main concern is wind or drafts but fresh air coming in is not ever a problem. I do not use heat on my birds since I have tractors all over the farm. They live in open air coops and as long as I block the wind my birds live through the winters.

I would HIGHLY recommend another alternative to sliding plexiglass....I have sliding plexiglass on the stall door at the barn where I board my horse and to say the least it is a pain in the a**!!! Don't do it....you will regret it!
