After building a full sized walk in coop for the chickens, I wanted something less imposing so I just did a short duck hut. I figure they're only in it during the night through the year, so no point in doing more.


I've got a grey stain/sealer to go over it and make it look aged and then will be trimming it in 2x4 material split either down the center or cut in strips, depending on where it'll be.

The Khaki Kingdom​

• There are no trees so 75% sun screen gives shade (gotta convince them to use it)
• Green plastic box "wading pool", three water bowls - one is next to food dish near open door. They stay cleaner all spread out.
• Home is a plastic dog house with stout screen door and the lid of the green pan as weather barrier
• Backside of the pen is a 12' dog run panel. The other four panels are 3'x5' with bars bigger than you little finger. The are so stiff that once a bar is bent it cannot be straightened without help of something mechanical.
• House bedding is dry den (stall dry, etc) They do not have access to water or food in their house, although I have been reading some of the ideas for keeping it dry and providing some water. Winter is coming so there will be less need.
• You can see the 50 gal Rubbermaid stock tub and 5 brick "patio". Miss Betsy (I'm pretty sure she is a girl) refused to learn to get into the tub until I installed the patio. That is her standing on it. I installed the drain plug (stock item, optional, install yourself) because I couldn't tip it to refill it. The ducks love to play in the stream when I empty it, making little mud holes with their bills in the downstream dirt.
• Yes, that is a 2' fence. I have had khakis before and know they don't fly high or far and only if it is needed. I worry more about the outside critters getting in and so they go into their house at night and the door is secured. It has a 12 watt nightlight (LED) They love their light. I am thinking though of installing a low power light in the pen proper so that I can still see if something is prowling around and turn off the nightlight using a remote switch. When they are old enough to start laying I think even the little night light might be too much light and mess up their cycle.
• When it is bed time they all crowd into the tub and settle in, heads under their wings. They insist that they are safe enough there. I herd them into the pen and leave them for an hour or so. There they can get into their kibble and perhaps wash their feet in the wading box. Then, if they haven't gone there already, I herd them into their house and shut the door. I can tell in the morning that they want to come out as their all stand at the doorway and look out. Then they have an hour in the pen and I open the gate so they can go into the yard and their precious tub.

Our six Pekins have free range of our property to include our front yard pond. EVERY night they go in their 4' x 8' duck hut due to coyotes! Northeast Ohio winters get cold!
