We are quite new to chickens, and we purchased a few barred rock chickens this year. My daughter loves the barring and wanted to know if there are any barred chickens with other colors (other than black and white). For example, are there any chicken breeds with red and buff barring. Or is this not possible. Just curious. Thanks.

Even Plymouth Rocks, the breed you purchased, come in other barred or laced colors. Partridge Rocks have red and black bands in their feathers, though the way they are on the feather is specifically partridge (They look like little eyes), not barred. I think they also come silver laced, and several other pretty multicolored varieties. Columbian rocks are white bodied with black lacing all on their hackles. I am sure there are more...

The gene for barring is separate from the gene for color, so while black is the most common color there are other colors out there. In my little fantasy world I plan to make blue barred sex linked marans by breeding a splash rooster to black barred hens (the splash crossed with black will mean that 100% of the chicks should be blue, while the barring on the hen will mean all of the female chicks should be "solid" while all the male chicks should be barred and thus easily sexed at hatch). I know there's someone on here working on lemon cuckoo orpingtons, a kind of light yellowy buff with barring. Crele is a specific barred pattern with red and black (I think it's black breasted red with barring, but I may be wrong on that as I'm not sure of the exact genetics behind crele). And I think I've seen a picture of lavender barred birds.

i have seen a few other colors with cuckoo pattern or barring.

in my opinion the black barred are the most striking looking because of the contrast, but i also like the other color variations.

crele is barred/cuckoo + partridge.

True Crele is Barred + Black Breasted Red it isn't Cuckoo + Partridge.

Also, I dont know if they are still around but we made some dun barred wyandotte bantams. It would be easy to make with OEGB as well, even polish. Dun crele has been made before as well and if I can find a crele phoenix bantam from our lines I have a dun based hen to make dun crele phoenix.

Barring, Cuckoo, whatever, still - there's the normal, Blue, Splash, Chocolate, Lavender, Lemon, (Buff) Red, Crele (duckwing) Golden (brown-red) Partridge, the list goes on.

Barring has been made in almost every form now.

However birds that are both laced and barred are extremely rare, and only found in some Polish.
