Does the color of a baby chick determine it's adult color?

Not really, some chicks have a stripped coloring, its the coloring needed to keep camo-ed from predators. My Australorps are going to be solid black birds, but right now at 3 weeks they are spotted with white. Depending on the breed, you can usually guess the color by looking at pictures of the adults. However, if they are mixed it would be alot harder to guess.

I agree with the above post. In general certain chick colors are a good indication of the adult colors. However, some colors are hardier to tell and it becomes more of a challenge for some mixed breed chicks

I have some mixed chick babies so I guess its going to be tough to tell the adult color! Some are almost a solid yellow, some are striped, and I even have one with stripes on the back of the head and down the back but with black spots on the face. They are different sizes as well. Some are pretty big babies while others are really tiny! Its going to be interesting to figure out who came from which hen and rooster!

Thanks! I ended up with 10 chicks from 13 eggs which is not too bad. Today I'm setting a couple of eggs from my partridge Silkie hen, Cocoa, and my black tailed bantam, George. I'm very curious as to what those babies are gonna look like! They are going to be weird looking!!

Babies???? Hmmm?

It is fun to guess. And sometimes you can be pretty sure .. But yellow usually turns white and for instance Rhode island reds are red when they are born .. but a Barred Rock will be almost all black with a whiter belly and a white spot on the top of their head and they end up having a beautiful zig zaggy zebra'ish pattern .. The chip Monk patterned ones are often Easter eggers and they can very in looks a lot .. I enjoy mixing when hatching Its like a Surprise ! Though I do try to keep some isolated to keep pure chickens in my Flock ..

Not all barred rocks will have a white underbelly. Some do, but some don't.
