Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

These are my 3 silkies that I have : all are 6 months old. I am curious what your observations are on them!! I know they aren't great photos, but it was pouring rain and all of the chickens were riled up and restless in the coop! Thanks!

You have some real beauties! I especially like your cockerel. Nice crest and great comb. Not too sure about his wings though. The coloring on your buff looks nice a even.

Your blue's rear is sloping down, and you're going to want that to grow in and start to look like a good tail/cushion that has nice height to it. If it stays sloped down like that, then she won't have the type you're looking for. The cockerel has a great comb right now and it looks like he is growing in his tail/cushion. You're going to want him to feather in a lot more and grow out those hackles and have more cushion for the type-- right now he doesn't have it. His crest is good and will likely fill in more, but he needs to stand up with his chest out and his tail and hackles touching. Since he is 6 months-- there is NO way you'll know right now what kind of quality he will be and what type he will have. Boys continue to mature past a year of age and he should look a LOT better when he is over a yr old. Wait 'till he is about 1.5 yrs old before you really determine how he's filling in. Your Buff pullet is a nice girl, but her crest is on the small side. Also, I can see her tail slopes down too-- same comments about that as for your blue. Her wings look good (better than the other two)-- pull them out and check for signs of split. It sure doesn't look like she has that problem at all, but good to check. Check your cockerel, too-- he is holding his wings awfully loose, so be sure they are stacking right and have no split.

It looks like split wing to me. I had two silkies with angel wing. I kept two babies in the house with the light on all the time for 8 wks and suddenly realized their wings had gotten huge and were folding wrong because of the extra weight. Obviously caused by eating day and night. I had babies the same age out side that were half their size. Same parents too.
I have no previous experience with Splits. So is a split because the feathers are growing in two different directions... OR they just don't grow in feathers in the middle and they can all grow in the same direction? These are growing in 2 different directions-- so are there two kinds of splits-- or is it simply the growth splits them... see what I mean? I don't know! So if you see a split and all the feathers are growing in the same direction, can you assume it's not a split and they are missing feathers... or would that ALSO be a split? I don't have one of those, but am wondering about it.

Standard of Perfection
X2 it's a book of every bird that is recognized in the US with the call outs that list exactly what the bird should look like both in male and female. Tells you everything from size and weight of the bird, to accepted colors, feet, wings, eye color, type of comb, on and on... It is pretty specific.
