Ok, so here is the story. I have just finished my coop. Now it it time to build the run and get some chickens! :) I answered a Craigslist ad and was lucky enough to haul away 150' of chain link fence, complete with all the polls and hardware, just for taking it down.

The fence was 5' high, so I plan to make my run 5' wide so I can use some of the fence for the top and floor of the run. Has anybody done this, and if so, how did you support / fasten the top chainlink fence?

Thanks for any advise,
Tim

I built 6x3 wood frame wire panels and formed the run. So my run is 3 feet tall. The tops rest on ledges fasten to wall panels and are removable. This is important because when you enter the run, you do not want to be crouching any longer than you need to.

I don't think you can use it for the top. When I did mine (also got it free for taking it down, SCORE!), I just did the sides and then took some netting and used that for the top. Works great! It would just be really difficult to put the chain link on the top I'd think, it is so flimsy until you have it up, know what I mean?

I would run stringers. Have your post set across from each other. In the top link of chainlink I would thread a heavy gauge wire (high tensil hot wire very stiff) from one end to the other. Add a cross member of pipe to the top of the fence post. How far apart are your post? Then lay the fence on top of the crossmember peices. Would also thread high tensil wire on both sides of top peice. Then wire together.

Hi! We have a 50x50 chain link run and covered it with netting. Putting the netting up was a pain, but well worth the effort! And it is tall enough we can easily walk under it!

I use chainlink for the run. Walls, floors and top.
I don't have any sagging, but did use the 6x6 panels. Easy to connect that way.
Using 5ft fencing; I think you'd either need to be able to pull it taut, or support it, across the top.

Good luck and let us know how you work it out.

We built trusses (sort of) for our run, and spaced them 4ft apart (the height of our chainlink) and then cut sections of our chainlink and ran them *across* the run, landing the edges on the trusses. That means that we had to cut however many sections to get the length of the run, but we don't have any saggging problems, and can stand up to walk in it.

Well, last night, I layed down a section of chain link on the "floor" of the run. I attached it to a tought wire run between the posts with hog rings. I put 2 runners across the top between the horizontal side poles. Then, I stretched wire across, pulling the long side poles together. I put those wires half way between the cross memembers. Then I attached a section of fence to the wall of the coop and pulled it the length of the run and wired it to the end cross member. It worked great! (No sag at all) Then I wired the side edges of the top to the top rail on the sides. Now all I have left to do is put the sides on. I think I am going to make it all one piece, wrapped around the posts so there are no gaps at the corners like regular chain link fence.
I have been taking pictures, but don't have them downloaded from my phone yet. I will post some soon.

PS....here is a drawing of what I have done so far.......
