Torn between metal shed and homemade moveable coop for ducks

Hi, I was looking at the many wonderful examples in the coops section. I need help deciding what kind of coop to use for my ducks. I'm planning to get a 10 or so either Saxony or possibly Silver Appleyard ducks.

I'm torn between building a mobile style coop, probably 6'x8' or 8'x8', where the nest up in the top section, and underneath is a screened in area for them to explore. Normally in good weather they'll also get large outdoor area enclosed by electronet to use. But in winter and bad weather they would still at least have the screened in lower area.

The other option would be a metal shed. I can get a 10x11 shed for $400. My area does not require any building permit for any building that will be used exclusively for livestock. But I read those sheds really need a good level foundation. Plus I'd still have to modify it to have at least a couple windows, and add ventilation.

The main reason I'd consider the shed over the mobile coop is that I can walk and sit inside the shed with the ducks. I'm just thinking in the winter I might enjoy doing that for short periods of time.

Getting a metal shed will save you some time designing a coop. And a shed works great. You can add stuff or do some mods as you see fit. I have used two sheds for coops and the chickens did just fine in both. $400 is a good price honestly when you consider all the costs of a DYI custom job.

Best of wishes to ya.

Thanks, I do like the shed idea. I was measuring it out, 10x11 is a pretty darn nice amount of space. I'd want to add windows to let daylight in, and venting of some sort, and a small side door to their fixed 'pen', and then from there to the electronet fenced area.

Hm, well I already bought the stuff this evening at Lowes to build my 'mobile coop' but it just consists of 2x lumber and plywood, which I can easily use on other projects.

I guess on the mobile coop I was just thinking I could wheel them around in the fields to wherever I want them. Like if I want them in the garden while I'm in there I could wheel the coop over there and do it.

But then again this 6x8 or 8x8 mobile coop is going to way likely nearly 200 lbs, so I'm not so sure it will be all that easy to move anyway ...

Here's the shed I was looking at: http://www.sheds.com/arrow_spacemaker_el1011_steel__storage_shed.html

Hm thinking about it more I think the clencher for me is the roof. That really makes me want to go the metal shed route. My 'roof' was going to be plywood but I intended to keep a tarp over it for actual protection. It's just not going to be a practicable solution.

Also I need two sheds, because I need another, probably smaller, shed for my goat buck. So I can order two closeout sheds at the same time, get them delivered the same day, and only have to be off work for one day to receive the shipment. Unloading a 300lb box with just me and the driver will be interesting, but I'm sure the drivers have unloaded heavier stuff than that before. I already know basically once the box is off the truck at the end of your driveway they're basically already pulling away.

Go with the shed! Think not only of the ducks convenience, but your convenience as well. I have 18 ducks, and they are messy! My coop is a 12x16 shed that was in poor condidtion when we bought our house. We fixed it up, and since we have plenty of inside room, we have a chicken section, a guidea section, a duck section plus 4 stacked crates where we can put sick, injured or bullies! I would also reccomend a people section, so you can go in and do your chores and maintenance without stepping in their poop! Like I said, ducks are messy, but they are great fun. They are nature's natural comedians!
