I bought a female pigeon for my male 1 day ago and when i put her in with the male he kept on chasing her and dragging his feathers on the ground and trying to nip her. This afternoon i snuck up on them to see what they were doing and i cought them kissing and then the male jump up on the female and flapped his wing and crossed tales and jumped of after about 4 seconds. The male is 6 months old and the female in 10 months old. Are they mating and how long till the egg is layed. I really want to know every possible bit of info of times till the hatch and when the egg is layed and also what to do when the hatch. What should i do now.

Im trying not to get in there way and there is a nest.

long and detailed answers would be great

thanks

If they are doing things like this I would say expect 2 eggs in about 10 days.

In your case your male may not be sexually mature so the eggs may not hatch.

The eggs should hatch in about 20 days and you can candle the eggs to see if they are developing (google egg candling for information). Patience!

I would suggest getting a dog bowl of sorts with the flared sides to avoid tipping approximately 8 to ten inches in diameter to serve as a nest bowl (I get mine at the Dollar Store in Canada).

It is not compulsory as they will make do but it keeps things tidy. If they do not want to use it do not try and force the issue or you will loose your clutch of eggs.

Do not disturb the nesting material until the squabs are fully fledged (at about 3 weeks) no matter how bad things look. I lost 2 squabs by my best homers by doing exactly that.

I would however suggest handling the squabs daily to get them used to your presence. (The parents will complain but nothing serious will happen).

I also hand feed my homers shelled peanuts and sunflower hearts which makes them come to me when called (it takes Patience). Only feed it as a treat and only from your hand.

I feed my pigeons chicken laying mash when they start to mate it works for me (some will disagree I do not race competitively). Also a bit of pine shavings or sawdust for a base in the nest bowl. They will add their own debris if allowed out side as well.

If you are into recycling an old brake drum works well for a nest bowl as well that is what Piper is using in this photo.
