I would like the recipe and when do you start giving this to them and do you always just keep it available to them? Can they consume too much?
 
The standard is giving it to them when they are 18 weeks old ( as stated on the package of grit/ oyster shell.
I didn't start giving any to mine till they started laying. Instead of oyster shell i gave them crumbled egg shells which worked well.
I dont think they can consume too much to hurt them. What will happen is that your egg shell will be good and tough ( sometimes too much so).
I Just always keep it available to them for now I may hold it back if the shells get too tough.

OK Here is the list of materials:

1 clean 16.9 or 20 oz plastic bottle,
1 plastic storage container. ( got those at the dollar store. You could also use the bottom out of a cottage cheese container or a night crawler container)
1 dual temp large glue gun. 9.00 for the cheaper ones at Walmart.
4-6" of 19ga wire.

Construction:
Cut 1/2 inch wide ovals on each side of the bottle, about 1/2 inch or less from the bottom of the bottle. Set your glue gun to high temp.
Wait till it gets hot and them put glue on the bottom of the bottle. CAUTION. bottle bottom will get hot and may try to melt or crinkle up on you i just took
my fingers and pressed the bottom down through the holes and flattened it out.
once it cools down get the 19ga. Wire, poke holes on ea side of the top. Run the wire through the hole then bend
it up into a hook. Do this on ea side. I also attached a small 6" pc of chain to hang it off the house. Anything will work to hang it with.


I would get a funnel to fill it up with made a big difference when filling it up. Mine, I got at the dollar tree.

I fill it right through the top. The bottom stays in place and can't be removed

Do you combine grit and oyster shells? Where do oyster shells come from and do I have to give both grit and shells along with their normal feed?
